The main mission of this visit was to assist an orphanage to set up a toy library at its local student centre with second-hand toys collected on campus before the trip. Service Trips of Morningside College Students Nineteen students of Morningside College flew to Lijiang, Yunnan Province from 25 to 30 May 2015 to build a greenhouse for a remote mountain village inhabited by the Yi ethnic minority. In addition to building the new greenhouse, the students interviewed villagers about their needs and performed a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis on a previously built greenhouse. Another group of 16 Morningside students went to Shaoguan in the north of Guangdong Province from 10 to 14 June 2015. They turned an unused schoolhouse into a newly painted and stocked library for around 100 children in a small village called Qinghutang. Prior to the trip, the students conducted preliminary research on issues surrounding education in rural China and compiled background information about the region in question. This research was then supplemented by investigative interviews that students held with local primary school teachers, village elders, parents of the village children, and even with the children themselves. Armed with knowledge about the community’s needs and desires, the students went on to prepare the library. After a long day and a half of preparation, they completed the renovation and taught the village children how to use and maintain the new library. 36 服務與關懷 Serving and Caring
