CUHK has been a pioneer in the transferring of technology with societal impact and entrepreneurship that bridges town and gown. The Pi Centre established in November 2014 provided the infrastructure and the necessary guidance and impetus to a number of student entrepreneurs with promise and helped their projects to emerge into external incubators.* Business incubation aside, the University also advocates knowledge transfer for social betterment and community engagement. To this end, the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) introduced in 2016 the ‘Sustainable Knowledge Transfer Project Fund’ (S-KPF) to enable some of the projects from the Knowledge Transfer Project Fund (KPF) to continue to envolve and develop into sustainable social enterprises for the benefit of the Hong Kong society. The new funding scheme had enabled Prof. Agnes Chan of the Department of Psychology and Prof. Gladys Tang of the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies to form their companies under advisement of experienced social enterprise consultants. Professor Chan’s company, Pro-talent Association Limited, provides music neuropsychology training to autistic children to reduce the social stigma of autism. Professor Tang’s SLCO Community Resources Limited offers a wide range of sign bilingual education services for hearing impaired children and school-based professional support services to facilitate their overall development.
