( f ) to r e c omme nd after report f r om the Boards of Studies concerned, external examiners for a p p o i n t me nt by the Co u n c il ; (g) to r e c omme nd the conferment of degrees (other than degrees honoris causa) and to award diplomas, certificates and other distinctions ; ( h ) to fix, subject t o any conditions made by the donors an d accepted by the Council, the times, the mo de and the conditions of competition for Un i v e r s i ty scholarships, bursaries and prizes, and to award the same ; ( i ) to r e c omme nd to the Council, the institution, abolition or h o l d i ng i n abeyance of any professorship, readership or senior lectureship and the assignment of any such post to a College ; ( j ) to confer the title of "Recognized L e c t u r e r " on the r e c omme n d a t i on of a Board of Advisers constituted i n accordance w i t h the provisions of paragraph 3 of Statute 16; ( k ) to r e c omme nd to the Co u n c il external experts to serve as members of Boards of Advisers ; ( I ) to elect members of the Senate to be members of the Co u n c il as provided i n paragraph (h) of section 11 of the O r d i n a n c e; ( m ) to report to the Co u n c il on all Statutes and decrees and proposed changes thereof; ( n ) to report to the Co u n c il on any academic ma t t e r; (o) to discuss any matter relating to the Un i v e r s i ty and to report its views to the Co u n c i l; (p) to report to the Co u n c il on any matters referred to the Senate by the Co u n c il ; (q) to consider estimates of expenditure prepared in respect of the central activities of the Un i v e r s i t y, and to report thereon to the Council ; ( r ) to formulate, mo d i f y, or revise schemes for the organization of Faculties and to assign to such Faculties their respective subjects; also to report to the Co u n c il on the expedience of establishing at any t i me other Faculties or as to the expediency of abolishing, c omb i n i ng or s u b d i v i d i ng any Faculties; (s) to establish, mo d i f y, or abolish any Board of Studies and to determine its f u n c t i o n s; (t) to supervise the central l i b r a ry and laboratories ; (u) to require any undergraduate or student on academic grounds to terminate his studies at the Un i v e r s i ty ; (v) to determine— (i) the academic year, w h i ch shall be a period not exceeding twelve consecutive months, and (ii) the academic terms wh i ch shall be part of an academic year ; (w) to exercise such other powers and p e r f o rm such other duties as the Co u n c il may authorize or require ; ( x ) to discipline students. 4. T h e Senate shall h o ld at least thre e meetings i n each academic year and additionally at any t i me at the direction of the Ch a i r man or on the w r i t t en request of any five members of the Senate. 5. Seven days' notice i n w r i t i ng of any meeting of the Senate shall be sent by the Registrar to each person entitled to receive notice of the meeting w i t h the agenda therefor and no business not on such agenda shall be transacted if the Ch a i r ma n or any t wo members present object. 6. T h e Senate may make for the proper conduct o f its business Standing Orders w h i ch it may amend or rescind by simple ma j o r i ty at any of its meetings p r o v i d ed that not less t h an seven days’ notice has been given i n w r i t i ng by th e Registrar to memb e rs of the Senate of the proposal so to amend or rescind. 7. T h e q u o r u m at any meeting of the Senate shall be ten. STATUTE 12 The Convocation 1. T h e Convocation of the Un i v e r s i ty shall consist of all persons whose names appear on the Convocation roll. 14
