recognized by the Senate for this purpose provided that the degree of Bachelor shall not be conferred u p on such student unless-- (i) he shall have attended an approved course of study as a matriculated student of the Un i v e r s i ty for at least t wo academic years, one of wh i ch shall be the final year ; and (ii) his total period of attendance as a matriculated student of this and another university or universities shall have been not less than three academic years ; ( b) accept, u n t il a date four years after the date of establishment of the Un i v e r s i t y, as part of the attendance of a student qualifying h i m for the conferment of the degree of Bachelor attendance as a registered student o f one or more of the Fo u n d a t i on Colleges before the establishment of the Un i v e r s i ty provide d that the degree of Bachelor shall not be conferred u p on such student unless— (i) he shall have attended as a matriculated student of the Un i v e r s i ty at least the final year of an approved course o f study for a Bachelor's degree; and (ii) his total period of attendance as a matriculated student of the Un i v e r s i ty and as a registered student of one or more of the Fo u n d a t i on Colleges shall have been not less than the complete period prescribed for the conferment of the degree. 5. T h e Senate ma y— (a) accept a certificate of proficienc y i n any subject issued by another university recognized for this purpose by the Senate; and ( b) u n t il a date four years after the establishment of the University, accept a certificate of proficiency i n any subject issued by an y of the Fo u n d a t i on Colleges as the result of an examination taken not later than the year of establishment of the Un i v e r s i t y, as exempting f r om any examination of the Un i v e r s i ty in such subject for the degree of Bachelor other than an examination q u a l i f y i ng fo r that degree i n the final year of an approved course of study therefor. 6. Save as p r o v i d ed i n paragraphs 1 0 and 11 , the degree of Master shall not be conferred u p on any person i n any Faculty unless he has pursued an approved course of study or research for a period of at least twelve months after satisfying the requirements for the conferment of the degree of Bachelor in the Faculty concerned or after admission as a research student i n terms of paragraph 9. 7. Save as provided i n paragraphs 10 and 11 the degree of Do c t or of Philosophy i n any Faculty shall not be conferred u p o n any person unless he has— ( a ) followe d an approved course of research as a student of the Un i v e r s i ty for a period of at least t we n t y - f o ur mo n t hs after satisfying the requirements for the conferment of the degree of Bachelor i n the Facult y concerned or afte r admission as a research student in terms of paragraph 9 ; and ( b) s u bm i t t ed a thesis wh i ch is certified by examiners to mak e a distinct c o n t r i b u t i on to the knowledge or understanding of the subject and to afford evidence of originality shown either by the discovery of ne w facts or by the exercise of independent critical power. 8. Save as provided i n paragraphs 10 and 11 the degree of Do c t or of Literature , Do c t or of Science or Do c t or of Social Studies shall not be conferred u p on any person unless— (a) he shall be a graduat e of the Un i v e r s i ty of not less than seven years standing; and (b) he shall have made in the o p i n i on of the examiners a sustained c o n t r i b u t i on of distinction to the advancement of his subject. 9. A person who has graduated i n another university or who as a registered student of one of the Fo u n d a t i on Colleges has obtained before the date of establishment of the Un i v e r s i ty a d i p l oma or certificat e issued by or on behalf of such Fo u n d a t i on College may be specially exempted f r om the matriculation requirement o f the Un i v e r s i ty and may be admitted as a research student and may proceed to the degree of Master or Do c t or under such conditions as may be prescribed by the Statute s and by decrees and regulations made thereunder. 10. T h e Senate may recommend the confermen t of the degree of Master or Do c t or in any Faculty on any memb er of the academic staff of the Un i v e r s i ty or on any f u l l - t i me memb er of the teaching staff of any of the Colleges and for this purpose may exempt any such person f r om any of the requirements prescribed for the conferment of the degree other than the examination therefor. 20
