L i C h oh -m ing as firs t Vice Chancellor o f the Chinese U n iv e rs ity and the conferm ent o f degrees earlier in the day and said tha t the u n ive rsity was now w e ll and tru ly launched. 'W e are now, quite in d u b ita b ly, and before the whole w o rld , a U n iv e rs ity ; and this is a proud title indeed,' said S ir D avid. T h e fo llow in g is the text o f H is Excellency the G ove rnor's speech: T h is , o f course, is a great day fo r us in the Chinese U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng Kong. A ltho ug h the U n iv e rs ity has been in practical operation fo r some tim e now, somehow the form al, p u b lic acts o f in sta lling the V ice-Chancellor and con ferring the firs t degrees have con tribu ted very greatly indeed to b rin g in g the whole U n ive rsity to life. We are now, quite in d u b ita b ly, and before the whole w o rld , a U n iv e rs ity ; and this is a proud title indeed. Before us now stretches a fu tu re o f devotion to the cause o f tru th and higher learning; and to the tra in in g o f the young leaders o f tom orrow . I can th in k o f no w o rth ie r and more honourable endeavour— and if we approach this task pro ud ly, we also approach it in h u m ility fo r it w ill require o f all o f us the highest qualities we can b rin g to bear. T oda y then we can say that ou r U n iv e rs ity is w e ll and tru ly la un ched: and in this consummation our Vice- Chancellor and ou r H ono rary Graduates have played a v ita l part. I do not need to stress this in the case o f D r. L i. We ail know how hard and w ith what complete devotion he has worked to make the U n iv e rs ity a reality. Ex pe r t and F r i e nd l y Adv i ce O u r H ono rary Graduates also have o f course given the U n iv e rs ity very great help in its form ative stages ; help w h ich has played an essential part in b rin g in g the U n iversity in to being. F rom them , and from our other guests here this evening also, I do not doub t we shall receive m uch expert and frie n d ly advice and assistance in the future. A ll this, and w ith o u t going in to details w h ich w ill be fam ilia r, I most sincerely and g ra te fully acknowledge ; and on behalf o f the U n iv e rs ity 1 p ro ffe r our most hearty and sincere thanks to them all. But when I said a mom ent ago that our Honorary Graduates, and indeed our other guests at the ceremony this m orning, had played a v ita l pa rt in today's proceedings, I meant something more than this, and something rather different.
