W u expressed their greetings to the new association and pledged their support. A dinner for the graduates was held in the evening, and was attended by D r . and M r s. Ch'ien Mu. New Asia Graduation A congregation for the awar d of diplomas to graduates of New Asia College was held on July 11, 1964 in the College Hall. President Ch'ien M u officiated at the ceremonies. Ab o ut eight hundred guests were present, among w h om were M r . H u i Yeung Shing, M r . Tsai Ch i ng Yau, and D r . Shen Yee, Governor s of the College. D r . Ch'ien delivered the graduation speech. M r . Sun K u o - t u ng read a speech of D r . Vermier Y . Chiu, Chairman of the College Board of Governors, who was unable to attend in person. Diplomas were then awarded and the congregation closed w i th a speech f r om Miss L au Wo on Ying, the representative of the graduates. Dr. Ch'ien on Leave D r . Ch'ien M u , President of New Asia College, summitted his resignation to the College Board of Governors in July this year. He was requested to stay on and granted a leave of eleven months. D u r i ng D r . Ch'ien's absence, D r . T . C. Ou, the Vice-President, w i ll be the Ac t i ng President of the College, while M r . B. P. Schoyer w i ll he the Acting Vice-President. Chung Chi Graduation T h e T e n th Graduation and Baccalaureate Ceremony of Ch u ng Chi Colleg e was held on Sunday, July 12 in the College Chapel. I t was the first time that the College combined the Graduation Ceremony and the Baccalaureate Service. D r . C. T . Yung, President of Chung Chi College, and D r . S. C. Leung, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors, delivered speeches to 84 graduates. I n his address, D r . Y u ng raised the important issu e of the relationship of the Chinese University to the business and industrial c ommu n i ty of Ho ng Kong. D r. Leung spoke o n ‘ T he Ma r ks of an Educated Person’. Teachers' Conference T he T h i r d Conference for Teachers of English as a Second Language was held at Ch u ng Chi College f r om August 10 to August 15. I t was opened by the Hon. W . D. Gregg, Director of Education. T h e six-day conference featured a series of lectures and discussions dealing wit h linguistic problems. Particular references were made to translation, television, films and also preparation of language text books in Southeast Asia. Ab o ut fifty teachers of English from Ho n g K o ng took part, and another fifteen linguistic experts and language teachers f r om Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sabah, Singapore, Thailand and South Vietnam also attended. Professor Bertha Hensman presided over the Conference. Overseas Scholarships for Chung Chi M r . CHAU Y i u Kee, Lecturer in Chemistry, to continue his second year of study at Liverpool University on a British Council Scholarship. D r . TSAO Maak Sang , Senior Lecturer in Chemistry, to take up research work for one year at the University of Southern California and the Northwester n University. Miss Olive C. YUEN, Assistant Lecturer in Social Wo r k, to take up graduate work for two years at To r o n to University. M r . CHAU Wah Ching, T u t or in English Language and Literature, to study at Oxford. M r . CHOW Gee Y i n, Demonstrator in Physics, to study at Case Institute of Technology. M r . CHOW K u i Hung, Demonstrator in Chemistry, to study at the University of Pittsburgh. M r . KUNG Ching, Demonstrator in Biology, to study at Pennsylvania University. M r . T y r o ne T . L . LAI, Demonstrator in Chemistry, to study at L o n d on School of Economics. M r . LAM Wo on Chung, T u t o r in Mathematics, t o study at M c G i l l University. M r . LEUNG Sik Kwa n, Demonstrator in Biology, to study at Indiana University. M r . WONG Yan Chiu, Demonstrator in Physics, to study at Manitoba University. Orientation for New Students A n Orientation Programme was conducted at Un i t ed College on September 19 for about 160 new students. T h e Programme began w i th an assembly at the College Ha ll attended by officers, teachers and all the new students. Addressing the assembly, M r . T . C. Cheng, the President, welcomed all the new student s to the College and introduced them to the Senior Officers as well as the Professors, Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments. He also gave a brief sketch of the histor y of the College and its developments in recent year s and wished all new students a successful and creative academic career. M r . K w o k Yau-yee, President of the Students' Un i o n, then spoke to the assembly and depicted the various activities organized by the student societies unde r the Un i o n. T h e assembly was followed by a garden part y held in the campus where students met the Staff informally over tea and other refreshments. After tea, students were divided into groups according to their Departments for introductory talks given by Heads of Departments, at which the programme o f study of each Department was explained in detail. 8
