W u 's absence. INFORMAL EXCHANGE OF IDEAS On January 21, M r. T .C . Cheng, President o f U n ite d College, m et w ith representatives o f local secondary schools at U n ite d College to exchange ideas and discuss m u tua l problems. T h is is the firs t o f a series o f regular in fo rm a l meetings between senior staff o f the U n iv e rs ity and representa tives o f local catholic schools, C h ristian m id d le schools, G ra n t schools, G ove rnm en t schools and private schools. T h e arrangement, resulted from a meeting o f the V ice -C hance llo r w ith ten school p rincipals on Sep tem ber 24, 1964, w ill take place once every tw o months w ith the Presidents o f the three F ounda tion Colleges ta kin g tu rn s as hosts at th e ir respective colleges. W ang, E xam ination Secretary D u rin g the m eeting the fo llow in g subjects were discussed :- 1. Im p ro v em e n t o f E nglish standard in Chinese m id d le schools ; 2. T h e M a tric u la tio n Syllabuses o f the U n iv e rs ity ; 3. La ck o f good te xt books in Chinese in certain subjects; 4. Suggestions fo r E x tra -m u ra l Studies Courses ; and 5. T h e need fo r coo rdination among the various lo cally conducted exam inations. T h e second meeting o f the in fo rm a l group is expected to be held in A p ril. CHANGES IN FEES STRUCTURE Since its inaugura tion in O ctober 1963, the Chinese U n iv e rs ity o f H o n g K o n g has fo rm u la ted plans fo r the expansion and im p rovem ent o f its facilities, in c lu d in g in s tru c tio n , research, service to the local comm u n ity and in te r-u n iv e rs ity relations and co-operation. T he U n iv e rs ity , on F ebruary 26, announced th a t the H ong K o n g G ove rnm en t has, fo r purposes o f subvention, approved in p rin c ip le the fo llow in g projects: 1. T h e creation o f a U n iv e rs ity L ib ra ry in w h ich specialized collections w ill be kept, in addition to the existing college lib ra rie s ; such L ib ra ry to be used m a in ly fo r graduate and facu lty research and fo r in d iv id u a l advanced study by senior students o f the U n iv e rs ity . 2. T h e opening o f a School o f Education to p ro ­ duce much-needed graduate teachers, especially fo r the Chinese m id d le schools in H o ng K on g . 3. T h e setting up o f tw o research institutes, viz., the In s titu te o f Social Studies and Hum an ities w h ic h envisages the inclusion o f u n its in such areas as business and p u b lic adm in istra tion , econom ics, geography, mass comm unication, m odern and contem porary Chinese social studies, social survey, sociology, social welfare, w o rld histo ry, and modern languages ; and the In s titu te o f Science and Technology w h ic h w ill engage in bo th basic and applied research in such areas as biology, chem istry, physics, mathematics and statistics. 3
