Dr. Sheng, born in Soochow, did his undergraduate work in music at the Universit y of Shanghai where he received the B.A. degree in 1943. After his graduation, he remained in his alma mater to direct choral organizations and the university orchestra. He went to the States i n 1947 to enter the School of Church Music at the Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Two years later, he received his Master of Sacred Music degree. Subsequently, he was awarded a fellowship by the Union Seminar y in New York City where he did one year's work in the School of Sacred Music. He moved to the west coast to begin his doctoral study at the School of Music of the University of Southern California at Lo s Angeles. His study was interrupted, however, in 1955 when he was invited to a teaching post in Taiwan. From 1956 on he was on the faculty of the Taiwan Baptist Seminary in Taipei. While there, he organized and established a music department , whic h was later elevated to the graduate level, and served as its chairman and graduate professor until the summer o f 1962 when he left again for Los Angeles to resume his doctoral work. He finished al l requirements in 1964 and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. For his scholastic achievement, he received honors at graduation and was elected by the school to a membership in the Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Honorary Music Society.
