H u Ch'ang-tu A series o f p u b lic lectures sponsored by the School o f Education o f T h e Chinese U n iv e rs ity o f H o n g K o n g were held on January 26, 27, 28 at the A u d ito riu m o f N ew Asia College, F a rm Road, K o w lo o n , from 5-30 to 6:30 p.m . T h e speaker was D r. H u C h 'a ng -tu , Professor o f E du cation, Teachers College, Co lum b ia U n iv e rs ity . T h e title s o f the lectures were as fo llow s: “ Recent T re n d s in E du ca tio n : A Comparative V ie w " (January 26); “ T h e S tud y o f Com parative E d u c a tio n : A n A p p ra is a l" (January 27); "E d u c a tio n in C h ina : the T w o Phases" (January 28). Professor H u C h 'a ng -tu , a graduate o f N a tio n a l Futan U n iv e rs ity , obtained his M .A . and P h .D . degrees from the U n iv e rs ity o f W ashington, Seattle, in 1950 and 1953 respectively. H e had taught at many m ajor Am erican universities. He was Research Associate in charge o f the Far-Eastern Area, H um an Relations Area F ile s, Yale U n iv e rs ity , from 1954 to 1957, and was V is itin g Associate Professor at P rinceton U n iv e rs ity in 1961. Professor H u is the author o f tw o books: " C h in a , Its People, Its Society, Its C u ltu re " and "C hinese E ducation U n d e r C om m un ism .” He has also c o n tributed articles to such noted jo u rn a ls as the F a r Eastern Quarterly, Comparative Education Review, The China Qua rte rl y (London), and The Wo r ld Forum. Professor H u delivered his lectures in E nglish w ith summaries in Chinese. D r . E berhard Jaeckel A p u b lic lecture on "B ism a rck's Role in European H is to ry " was sponsored by T h e Chinese U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng K o n g on F rida y, F ebruary 18, 1966 at 7:00 p.m . at the School o f E ducation, L iu Chong H in g B u ild in g , 593-601 Nathan Road, K ow loon. T h e speaker was D r. Eberhard Jaeckel, Le ctu re r o f M od e rn H isto ry, U n iv e rs ity o f K ie l. D r. Jaeckel visited H o ng K o n g at the in v ita tio n o f the Goethe In s titu te . D r. Jaeckel is a w e ll-kn ow n scholar o f modern histo ry. A graduate o f the U n iv e rs ity o f F reib urg , he fu rth e r studied at the State U n iv e rs ity o f F lo rid a and the U n iv e rs ity o f Paris. H e had tau ght at several educational in stitu te s in G ermany and is a mem ber o f several research centres. F rom 1962 to 1963, he was a guest reader at the Punjab U n iv e rs ity in Chandigarh. D r. Jaeckel was also in v ite d by N ew Asia College to de live r a ta lk to the students. Dr . Dan g D in h A ng D r. Dang D in h Ang, Associate Professor o f M a th ematics at the U n iv e rs ity o f Saigon, gave a sem inar on " Some F ixed P o in t Theorem s and T h e ir A p p lic a tio n " to students o f T h e Chinese U n iv e rs ity and the U n iversity o f H o n g K o n g on F ebruary 25, 1966 at U n ite d College. D r. A n g was V is itin g Senior Research F o llow at the C a lifo rn ia In s titu te o f Technology from 1962 to 1963, C onsu ltant in A p p lie d M athem atics at the In s titu te o f Geophysics at Los Angeles, U n iv e rs ity o f Californ ia , from 1964 to 1965. H is field o f research is fu n ctiona l analysis and applications. Dr . L i n Y u -tang D r. L in Y u -ta n g , the celebrated Chinese author, was in v ite d by the Departm ents o f E x tra -M u ra l Studies o f the tw o U n ive rsitie s to give tw o p u b lic talks, one in Chinese on F ebruary 28 , the other in English on M a rc h 8. D r. L in was also in v ite d by New Asia College to address its students at the commencement o f the College S p ring T e rm on F ebruary 21. O ver seven hundred staff members and students attended. A fte r in tro d u c tio n by D r. T .C . Ou, President o f New Asia College, D r. L in delivered an address on " T h e V irtue s o f L e a rn in g ". H e cited examples o f the ancient to show tha t the ultim ate purpose o f le arn ing is not to get a certificate or any w o rld ly honour, although they are undeniably useful in the present day, b u t to develop one's th in kin g faculty. D r. L in 's talk, delivered in an unpretentious, sim ple style, b u t scin tilla te d w ith jokes and hum ou r, was w a rm ly applauded. LECTURE ON JOURNALISM " Newspapers in H o ng K o n g should have th e ir own correspondents in V ietnam and in other Southeast Asian c o u n trie s ," said M r. Robert Shaplen, Hong K o n g correspondent fo r the N ew Y o rk e r Magazine, d u rin g his lecture on " V ie tn am— Challenge and F ru stration" at the N ew Asia College A u d ito riu m on F eb ru a ry 24. T h e lecture was the firs t in the series jo in tly sponsored by the Mass C omm unications Centre o f the U n iv e rs ity 's In s titu te o f Social Studies and the H um an ities, and the D epa rtm ent o f Jou rna lism o f N ew Asia College.
