A f t er the procession entered the Ha l l, the Chancellor, Sir D a v id T r e n c h, K . C . M . G . , M . C . , declared the Congregation open. I n the solomn ceremony that followed, the graduates and diplomates were presented to the Chancellor for the conferment of degrees or award of diplomas. A f t e r wa r d s the Vice-Chancellor, D r . C h o h - M i ng L i , addressed the Congregation. A total of 338 students f r om the three Fo u n d a t i on Colleges sat for the De g r e e / D i p l oma Ex am i n a t i o n, of w h o m 300 received degrees and 26 diplomas. 46 graduated cum laude. T h e Congregation was followed by a graduation dinner that same evening in the Restaurant of the C i ty Hall. M r . B. Preston Schoyer, Representative of Ya l e - i n - Ch i na in H o n g K o n g, proposed a toast to the graduating class of 1966, to w h i ch M i ss T a n g A n - Y an and M r . K w o k Ya u - Yee replied, in Chinese and En g l i sh respectively, on behalf of the class. ‘‘SIGNS OF MATUR I TY AND DEVELOPMENT’’ English Text of the Vice-Chancellor's Speech delivered in Chinese at the Congregation. Y o u r Excellency, Ladies an d Ge n t l eme n: First, to all of y ou of the graduating class, I w o u ld like to extend my heartiest congratulations for your achievements, and to wish y ou the best of luck in the years ahead. T h i s year, for the first time, we have instituted a system of awarding marks of distinction and it is a great pleasure to me to note that 46 of you have achieved Bachelor Degrees cum laude. Y ou w i ll be even more pleased to k n ow that the H o n g K o n g Go v e r nme nt has j u st decided to equate our cum laude and magna cum laude degrees w i t h second and first honours degrees respectively of all other Commonwealth Universities for the purposes of emp l o yme nt in the Public Service. T h i s is the t h i rd Congregation of T h e Chinese Un i v e r s i ty for the awarding of degrees. I t also marks the Un i v e r s i t y 's t h i rd anniversary, and I am pleased to report that we are s h ow i ng signs of ma t u r i ty and development that seem to me to be rather precocious
