L i u F ah Hsuen, a native of Hsiang Yang, H u p e h, received his B.Sc. degree in Biology at the Na t i o n al T s i n g H u a Un i v e r s i ty in 1931, and his P h . D. degree at the Un i v e r s i ty College, Un i v e r s i ty of L o n d o n, in 1937. H e became Professor of Biology at the Na t i o n al Shantung Un i v e r s i t y, Tsingtao, in 1938, and Professor of Zoology of the Na t i o n al T a i w an Un i v e r s i ty in 1953. Wh i l e as D i r e c t or of the Institute of Fishery Biology of the M i n i s t ry of Ec o n om ic Affairs and the Na t i o n al T a i w an Un i v e r s i t y, D r . Professor Mason Rossiter Sm i t h, Visiting Professor in Journalism Professor Ma s on Rossiter Sm i th was b o rn in 1909 i n Buffalo, N ew Y o r k, and graduated w i t h a Bachelor of A r ts degree cum laude f r om Amh e r st College. He has held a variety of journalistic posts i n c l u d i ng those of Legislative Correspondent at A l b a ny for Syracuse, N . Y . Herald, and N . Y . Da i ly T i me s, Ma n a g i ng Ed i t or of T r i b u n e - P r e s s, Go u v e r n e ur N . Y ., owner, Ed i t or and Publisher of the St. Lawrence Plain-dealer. He has also been assigned to various parts of Europe and Asia as special correspondent. He was Ch a i rman of the Weekly Newspaper Editors for E i s e n h owe r - N i x on in 1952, D i r e c t or of the G . O . P. Weekly Neswpaper Bureau, Rockefeller gubernatorial campaign in 1958. He was one of the founders, first President and a director of St. L aw r e n ce Co u n ty ( N . Y .) U n i t ed F u n d, E d i t or of St. Lawrence Co u n ty Historical Association, and Ed i t or of the p u b l i c a t i on Quarterly. He is a memb er of the Ch amb er of Commerce, the f o rmer State Ch a i rman of the Na t i o n al Ed i t o r i al Association, former President of the N e w Y o r k Press Association, Ch a i r man of Sigma Delta Chi, and a memb er of the Executive Co u n c il of the Professional Society of Journalism in 1957. Professor Sm i th was awarded the Wells Memo r i al K e y by Sigma Delta Chi for distinguished service to j o u r n a l i sm in 1958. He retired f r om the p r i n t i ng and p u b l i s h i ng business (Ma s on Rossiter Sm i t h, Inc., Go u v e r n e u r, N . Y . ) in July, 1966, and is n ow Professor of Journalism and D i r e c t or of the Mass Commu n i c a t i o ns Centre of this Un i v e r s i t y. Dr. James R. Townsend, Visiting Scholar in Journalism D r . James R. T o w n s e nd was b o rn in Hastings, Nebraska, U . S . A. and is now teaching in the Journalism De p a r t me nt at N ew Asia College. He received his B . A. f r om the Un i v e r s i ty of Omaha, ma j o r i ng in Go v e r nme n t. T h e M . A . and P h . D. degrees conferred on h i m by the Un i v e r s i ty of California, Berkeley , were in recognition of his research on International Relations and Political Science. He later taught Political Science at the Un i v e r s i ty of California, Berkeley, as T e a c h i ng Assistant, A c t i ng Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor. D r . T o w n s e nd has served on the De p a r t me n t al Graduate Studies Comm i t t e e, the School of Business Adm i n i s t r a t i on (as L e c t u r er in the Executive Program), the Executive Comm i t t ee of the Centre for Chinese Studies and the East Asia T r a i n i ng Comm i t t e e, all of the Un i v e r s i ty of California, Berkeley. He is a memb er of the Association for Asian Studies and the Ame r i c an Political Science Association.
