GI FTS TO THE UNI VERS I TY (1) The McDouall Scholarship Fund T h e Un i v e r s i ty received on October 31, 1966 f r om the H o n. J.C. M c D o u a l l, the r e t i r i ng Secretary for Chinese Affairs, a cheque for HK $ 1 6 0 , 0 00 w h i ch represented the M c D o u a ll Scholarship F u n d for setting u p scholarships to promote the study of Chinese Literature and H i s t o ry in T h e Chinese Un i v e r s i t y. T h e F u n d was donated by the Chinese c ommu n i ty in H o n g K o n g i n c ommemo r a t i on of M r . McDouall's service to the Chinese people in H o n g K o n g. On ly the interest accruing f r om the F u n d w i l l be used. T h e scholarships w i l l be fairly distributed, as far as possible, amo ng the three F o u n d a t i on Colleges of the Un i v e r s i t y. Bo th undergraduates and postgraduates of Chinese Literature or H i s t o ry are eligible for the awards. (2) American Assistance for Building the University's Student Centre I n a brief b u t impressive ceremony on No v emb er 2, 1966, D r . C . M . L i , Vice-Chancellor of the Un i v e r s i t y, received a pledge of funds f r om the people of the U n i t ed States to be used for the construction of a Student Centre on the new Un i v e r s i ty campus. I n the Vice- Chancellor's office, D r . L i and Ame r i c an Counsul General E d w a rd E. Rice signed an agreement under w h i ch th e U . S. Far East Refugee P r o g r am w i ll provide US$300,000 fo r the construction of the Centre. As par t of the same ceremony, M r . Edgar N . Pike, on behalf of T h e Asia Foundation, presented D r . L i w i t h a cheque for US$57,000 as an additional contribution t owa rd th e construction of the Student Centre. T h e Student Centre w i l l he the first b u i l d i ng on the new Un i v e r s i t y campus site and is expected to be ready i n 1968. Students of the Un i v e r s i ty w i ll be able to use the Centre for social, cultural and recreational purposes. Social and cultural facilities to be provided in the b u i l d i ng includ e dining, reading, committee, and common rooms, i n addition to offices for student organizations and space for specialized activities such as photography and tape recording. Billiard and games rooms w i l l be equipped at the Centre, and there are plans for the subsequent addition of other indoor facilities and an o u t d o or s w i mm i ng pool. ADVISOR FOR CAMPUS PLANN I NG A t the i n v i t a t i on of D r . C . M . L i , Vice-Chancellor of the Un i v e r s i t y, D r . I . M . Pei, an internationally famed architect, made a special t r ip to H o n g K o n g to advise the Vice-Chancellor on site p l a n n i ng for the Un i v e r s i ty campus on No v emb er 21. He inspected the Un i v e r s i t y 's campus site at Shatin on No v emb er 22. D u r i n g his sojourn here , Dr. Pei wo r k ed closely w i t h the Un i v e r s i ty A r c h i t e c t, the H o n . Szeto We i, and D r . R.C. Lee, Ch a i r man of the Un i v e r s i t y 's Camp us P l a n n i n g Comm i t t e e. A resident in the U n i t ed States, D r .
