生 先 福 連 李 及 長 校 李 Mr. Philip Lilienthal and the Vice-Chancellor UNIVERSI TY PRESS CONSULTANT A t the i n v i t a t i on of the Vice-Chancellor, M r . Ph i l ip E. L i l i e n t h a l, Associate D i r e c t or of the Un i v e r s i ty of California Press, arrived in H o n g K o n g on M a y 1 to serve as his consultant on matters relating to the establishment of T h e Chinese Un i v e r s i ty Press, w i t h some reference to the h a n d l i ng of the Un i v e r s i t y 's publications overseas. D u r i n g his one week's stay here, M r . L i l i e n t h al met w i t h the staff of the Un i v e r s i ty w ho were concerned w i t h its p u b l i s h i ng matters and problems. H e also called on all three Colleges and spent a whole day in i n t e r v i ew i ng College staff members who were responsible for and interested in matters of publication. O n the mo r n i ng of M a y 6, M r . L i l i e n t h al called on the Vice-Chancellor and made an oral report on his recommendations , w h i ch w o u ld be presented in w r i t i ng later. He left H o n g K o n g that afternoon. MEMBERSHIP I N THE SOCIETY FOR RESEARCH I NTO HIGHER EDUCAT ION T h e Un i v e r s i ty has secured corporate memb e r s h ip i n the Society for Research into H i g h er Education. T h e Society was set up in L o n d on in December, 1964 to encourage and co-ordinate research into all f o r ms of higher education. It seeks to make research findings more generally available and to promote their more effective use. Activities of the Society i n c l u d e: (1) organizing conferences, seminars and other meetings, (2) p u b l i s h i ng bibliographies, reports, abstracts of learned works, and review monographs, and (3), w o r k i ng in collaboration w i t h other national bodies interested i n research into higher education, and seeking to establish contact w i t h overseas organizations. I t is hoped that t h r o u gh participating in the Society's conferences and seminars, the Un i v e r s i ty w i l l obtain direct and first-hand knowledge and i n f o r ma t i on concerning contemporary educational problems and developments. LEVERHULME EXCHANGE PROGRAMME T h e exchange p r o g r amme between T h e Chinese Un i v e r s i ty and B r i t i sh universities i n the U n i t ed K i n g d o m, established under the sponsorship of the L e v e r h u l me T r u s t F u n d, is n ow in f u ll operation. T h e p r o g r amme provides o p p o r t u n i ty for the U n i v e r s i t y to invite a senior academic f r om the U n i t ed K i n g d om for a period of f o ur mo n t hs and, in the meantime, seconding a j u n i or memb er of the University's staff to a British institution for an academic year. 2
