Δ A three-day E x h ib itio n o f Paintings and C a lligraphy sponsored by the D epartm ent o f F ine A rts of N ew Asia College was held in the college au d ito rium on 11 th -1 3 th November. O u t o f the five hundred odd entries over 200 were selected fo r e xh ib ition . Badges were awarded to the successful entrants on the 11th. Δ A t the in v ita tio n o f the D epa rtm ent o f Chinese L ite ra tu re o f N ew Asia College, M r. Lee Y im , Senior L e c tu re r o f U n ite d College, gave a lecture on “ A Fundam ental K now ledge o f Oracle Bone In s c rip tio n s " on 18th Novem ber. Δ On 24th Novem ber, at the 101st M o n th ly M e e t- in g o f N ew Asia College, F r. Canice J. Egan, S J ., L e c tu re r o f its E nglish Departm ent, who had ju s t returned from study leave in England, gave a ta lk on “ H ipp ie s — W ho and W h y ? " Δ A t the Research Assistant Trainees 2nd M o n th ly Sem inar o f the In s titu te o f Advanced Chinese Studies and Research, N ew Asia College, held on 28th Novem ber, 2 papers were presented, M r. Chan C h u n g -lin g 's “ A P re lim in a ry Analysis o f the System o f U rb an S ubdivisions in Chang-an in the T ang D y n a s ty " and M r. Chan Y il-k a i's “ Chinese Im m ig ra n ts in Sabah". Δ Professor A n th o n y M . Tang, Dean o f Commerce and Social Science o f T h e Chinese U n iv e rs ity , and M r. H o C hun-yuen, L e ctu re r o f Econom ics o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H ong K o n g , were in v ite d to speak on 25th N ovem ber at a panel discussion sponsored by the Academ ic Bureau and C u rre n t A ffa irs C omm ittee o f the New Asia College S tudent U n io n , "O n Hongkong D o lla r D e va lu a tio n ", at w h ich union members also generously offered th e ir opinions. Δ M r. P .Y. L o , Chairm an o f the Depa rtm ent o f Econom ics and Business A dm in is tra tio n and Dean o f the F aculty o f A rts, C hung C h i College, spoke at an Econom ics Special T o p ic Sem inar on “ M eaning and E ffe ct o f the Devaluation o f the S te rling P o u n d " on 30th Novem ber. Δ U n d e r the sponsorship o f the D e pa rtm ent o f M u s ic o f C hung C h i College, the W ong Kw a ng Chinese O rchestra gave a performance in the College Chapel on 24th Novem ber. Δ M iss M argare t W u o f the D e pa rtm ent o f M usic, C hung C h i College, accompanied at the piano the w o rld - renowned cellist, Jonas Starker, in a p u b lic recital at the C ity H a ll on 21st November. Δ T h e U n ite d College S taff Association held a d inn e r in the College H a ll on 17th Novem ber to w e lcome new staff members. O ver seventy persons attended the dinner. Besides a varied programme o f singing and s to ry -te llin g there was the draw ing o f raffle tickets towards the close of the d inner. Prizes thus drawn were donated by th e ir w inners fo r auction. T h e proceeds from the auction and from the sale o f tickets totalled HK$350.50, w h ich w ent to swell the S taff Association's scholarship fund. Δ M r. P .Y. L o and M iss H .M . Lee were elected by the Academ ic Board o f Chung C h i College to be its representatives on the College C o un cil fo r the academic year 1967-68. Δ M r. P .Y. L o and M r. S .L . W ong, Lecturers at C hung C h i College, have been appointed by President C .T . Y un g to serve on the Refectory C omm ittee o f the college from 1st September, 1967 to 31st August, 1968. T h e C omm ittee consists o f 2 staff members and 7 students. Δ D r. Seung-ping L i and D r. S h ih -yu Feng, both o f Physics Depa rtm ent, Chung C h i College, jo in tly w rote an article en titled "P re cisio n Measurement o f the Period o f a P endulum using an O scilloscope", w hich appeared in the American J ou r na l o f Physics, V o l. 35 N o. 11, N ovem ber 1967. Δ M r. Lam K in -h u n g , a fina l-year student o f Business Management, U n ite d College, came ou t second in a "H o n g K o n g Week Students Essay C om p e titio n ” sponsored by the K u n g Sheung D a ily News, He was presented w ith a prize o f H o ng K o n g products w o rth $250 at a simple ceremony held at th a t newspaper's office on 19th Novem ber. Δ T h e E lection C omm ittee o f New Asia College S tudent U n io n on 10th Novem ber explained election procedures to the chairmen o f departm ental clubs, the presidential candidates and candidates fo r the posts o f executives and councillo rs at a meeting convened fo r the purpose, w h ich was attended by over 60 people. A T h e U n ite d College students debating team won the cham pionship and the Cheng Y u Lang Shield in a quadrangular debating contest in Cantonese, sponsored by the D ebating Society o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H ong K ong. P a rticip a tin g u n its were H o ng K o n g U n iv e rs ity and the three F oundation Colleges o f T h e Chinese U n ive rsity. In the fin a l debate, held at H ong K o n g U n iv e rs ity on 1st Novem ber, the U n ite d College team com prising Messrs. F ung L u k -ta k , L u k H u n g -ke i and H uen F u k- fai, th ird -y e a r students o f Chinese and H is to ry , spoke eloquently in favour o f the m o tio n "Sam e W o rk deserves Same Pay despite D ifferences in Academ ic Q ua lifications", w ith the H o ng K o n g U n iv e rs ity team, against it. A New Asia College S tudent U n io n held a melodrama com p etitio n in the college a u d ito rium on the evening o f 4 th Novem ber, at w h ic h 6 plays were pu t on by the departm ental clubs. 11
