Remarks of U.S. Consul General Edwin W, Ma r t in at the Cornerstone Laying of the Benjamin Franklin Centre Y o u r Excellency, ladies, and gentlemen; I am most pleased to be here to jo in in these ceremonies at Chinese U n iv e rs ity and to lay the founda tion stone o f the Benjam in F ra n klin Centre. C om ing to P hiladelphia a poor hoy w ith a lo a f o f bread unde r his arm , Benjam in F ra n k lin obtained an education th rou gh his own efforts — and these efforts were am p ly rewarded. S urely one o f the most versatile men Am erica has ever produced, F ra n k lin made o u t standing c o n trib u tio n s to the fields o f letters, science, diplom acy, and po litics. I t is most appropriate, then, th a t the name o f Benjam in F ra n k lin has been chosen fo r th is student centre w h ich is a g ift o f the Am erican people th rou gh the D epa rtm ent o f State and the Asia F ounda tion . W hen it is completed, the u ltim a te significance o f the B enjam in F ra n k lin Centre, like the u ltim a te significance o f Chinese U n iv e rs ity itself, depends on the students it w ill serve. I t w ill become p a rt o f their education. I hope it w ill come to stand as a sym bol n o t o n ly o f the pleasures o f u n iv e rs ity life , b u t also o f the same dedication to education, despite the sacrifices in volved, w h ich moved the man after w h om the centre is named.
