Kal ervo Tuukkanen, Visiting Professor, Music M r. K alervo Tuukkanen, the F inn ish composer, was born in M ik k e li in 1909 and began his v io lin playing at the age o f five. He studied music theory under Professor Ilm a ri K ro h n , composition under Professor Leevi Madetoja, and received his M .A . at the U n i versity o f H e lsin ki in 1933. In 1951 he studied in England on a scholarship sponsored by Jean Sibelius from the proceeds o f a Sibelius concert in Lond on conducted by S ir Thom as Beecham. On this journey, M r. Tuukkanen composed the sym phonic poem "T h e Song o f the H ig h la n d s" inspired by Scotland. F o r his sym phonic poem "B ear H u n t" fo r male cho ir and orchestra he was awarded a S ilver M edal at the art com petition o f the O lym p ic Games o f London in 1948. M r. Tuukkanen's productions consist o f five S ym phonies (the th ird one, "T h e Sea" fo r soprano, tenor, m ixed cho ir and orchestra), tw o V io lin Concertos, Cello Concerto, several sym phonic suites and poems, num er ous orchestral series and pieces, festive cantatas fo r chorus and orchestra, songs fo r solo voice, m ixed, male and female choir, incidental music and a one act opera I N D U M A T I w ith an Ind ia n background. He has conducted many orchestras and choirs, taught in several in stitutes and acted as music c ritic in H e lsin ki. Kal er vo Tuukkanen He has been the secretary and member o f the Board o f the F inn ish Society o f M u sic Teachers, the F inn ish U n io n o f Fine M usicians, the F inn ish Society o f Composers, State M u sic Comm ittee, State F ilm Prize Comm ittee, State A rt C omm ittee and the F inn ish Composers' Sibelius Foundation. Since 1950 he has been the secretary o f F O R U M A R T IS , the central organisation o f F inn ish artists, w hich consists o f tw en ty associations and covers the whole artistic field. He has con tribu te d w ide ly to the development o f art cultu re in F inland. He is at present V is itin g Professor at Chung C h i College, where he is teaching counterpoin t and orchestration. 5
