Chang Secretary Mass Communications Centre The Chinese University of Hong Kong A compilation of the speeches and essential parts of the discussions and samples of the reports is now being made so that a written record of the Seminar can be had for reference and future seminars of similar nature. HONORARY DEGREE FOR VICE-CHANCELLOR An honorary degree, Doctor of Social Science, was conferred on Vice-Chancellor Choh-Ming L i by the University of Pittsburgh on 27th April, 1969 in recognition of Dr. Li,s contribution to the world of international learning. The other recipients of honorary degrees were Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and author of the famous book: The Necessity for Choice—Prospects of American Policy; and Col. Frank Borman of the U.S. A ir Force, who participated in the rendezvous of the two-manned manoeuvrable spacecrafts, Gemini 6 and Gemini 7, in December 1965 and was also commander of Apollo 8, making a journey around the moon on 21st December, 1968. The University o f Pittsburgh has maintained a very dose relationship with this University and Professor C.K. Yan g from Pittsburgh University is now Professor of Sociology here. Citation for Dr. Choh-Ming L i I have the honour to present a brilliant economist and internationally distinguished leader in higher education — Dr. Choh-Ming L i, Vice- Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. L i was born in China, earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Nanking, his M. A. and Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. After some years of teaching in Chinese universities, he returned t o Berkeley to become Professor of Business Administration an d Director of the Center for Chinese Studies. In 1964 he was granted leave to accept the challenging leadership role in the establishment of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Determined to make the new University a creative intellectual forc e in Asian education, he sought to incorporate in its programmes approaches and methods from diverse institutions throughout the world, and i n so doing has created a truly international university. Through permanent or visiting arrangements, his faculty is enriched by scholars from France, Germany, Japan, Britain, and United States, including, happily, the University of Pittsburgh. A new and spectacular campus is under way. TOWN CENTRE FOR EXTRAMURAL STUDIES The Department of Extramural Studies now has its own Town Centre, at Star House, Tsimshatsui. It comprises four lecture rooms, a Conference Room, a Staff Room and a Reading Room. It serves the dual purpose of housing intercollegiate classes of the University in the day and extramural classes i n the evening. Because of its central location, it is extensively used as a conference and seminar site. BOOK EXHIBIT A Book Exhibit of United States University Presses, sponsored by this University in cooperation with the United States Information Service, was held at the Extramural Town Centre of this University from 18th to 26th April. The Exhibit of 430 titles was opened by Mr. Harvey J. Feldman, Cultural Affairs Officer of the American Consulate General, at a ceremony presided over by Dr. T.C. Ou, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. — 6 —
