The Programme opened with a key-note speech on "Management in a Global Context: an International Comparison" by Professo r Franklin E. Folts, Professor of Industrial Management, Harvard University and member of the Advisory Board of the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration. Prof. Folts emphasized in his speech that management must not be able only to adjust quickly to change, it must be able to influence change. The faculty for this inaugural programme included government and industrial leaders from Hong Kong and visiting scholars from universities in America, Taiwan and Thailand. Teaching Methods To achieve the objectives of the Programme, the following methods were employed: Lectures To impart information and to explain analytical methods. Visiting Speakers To introduce distinguished men from government and industry on current topics. Individual Problems To develop skill in using analytical methods. Group Problems To develop analytical skill and to promote useful exchange of knowledge and experience around specific problems. Class Discussions To develop creative thinking about specific issues and to encourage more effective verbal communication. Case Discussions To practise systematic analysis of complex problems, to broaden perception, and to develop skills of verbal communication. Group Presentations To practise analysis and decision-making in groups and to develop skills of verbal communication. Business Simulation To practise decision-making about multifunctional situations in a competitiv e setting and to develop effective small group working relations. Readings To impart knowledge and acquaint participants with the literature for their own future development.
