His Excellency the Chancellor, Sir David Trench, having declared the Congregation open, conducted the solemn ceremony and the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Choh-Ming L i, presented to the Chancellor the four eminent scholars as candidates for the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa, in recognition of their distinguished contribution to the advancement of learning and the University. Dr. Shiing-Shen Chern, Professo r of Mathematics at the University of California (Berkeley), has, since 1964, served on the Advisory Board on Natural Sciences and as External Examiner in Mathematics of this University. Dr. D.J.S. Crozier, Director of Education in the Colony from 1951 to 1962, had contributed much towards paving the way for the establishment of this University as well as establishing the Evening School of Higher Chinese Studies, the Grantham Training College and the Technical College. Mr. K.E. Robinson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong and formerly Professor of Commonwealth Affairs and Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London, has played an invaluable part in furthering cooperation between the two local universities. Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu, Professor of Physics at the University of Columbia , is an authority on nuclear physics of worl d reknown and has been a member of the Advisory Board on Natural Sciences of this University since 1964. Amongst the large gathering of distinguished guests were two overseas Council Members of this University: Lo rd John Scot t Fulton and Dr. Clark Kerr. Sir Robert Black, the first Chancellor of this University, Lady Fulton, and Mrs. Kerr were also present to witness the ceremony. Immediately after the Congregation the University held a Reception so that the honoured recipients, honorable guests, distinguished visitors, members of the Council and Senate, and members of the Academic and Administrative Staff could gather together to celebrat e the memorable occasion.
