Wu, Director of the School o f Education and Registrar o f th e University, ha s been appointed b y Hi s Excellency th e Governor t o represent th e Vice-Chancellor o f this University on the Wo r k i ng Party o n School Examinations Authority. This Wo r k i ng Party has been se t u p to consider and make proposals for the establishment of a central examination organization in Hong Kong; to consider and make proposals, after receiving representations from interested parties an d th e public, and seeking such assistance and advice a s may b e necessary f r om Government departments, schools and other educational bodies, and f r om overseas examination authorities i n Britain o r elsewhere, concerning the title, status and scope o f such an authority and details regarding its operation; and to make recommendations fo r th e transfer o f responsibility f r om existing authorities t o the proposed authority. Dr. A . Kaiming Chiu, University Librarian, was away from Hong Kong from 29th June t o 12th August t o serve as a consultant and lecturer a t the Institute f o r Fa r Eastern Librarianship a t th e University o f Chicago Graduate Library School. He taught a course on Library Systems for Chinese materials (administration and organization; selection and acquisitions; cataloguing an d classification; romanization and indexing, and prospects o f automation). The Institute provides technical an d bibliographical trainin g beyond the master's degree in library science through lectures and seminars i n the special problems o f building u p East Asian collections fo r American libraries. Studen t Participatio n in Internationa l Project s 16th International Student Conference Seven students o f this University attended the 16th International Student Conference held in Tok yo ill August, as members o f the delegation f r om the Hong Kong Federation o f Students. The theme o f the Conference was "Invocation for Peace". 1969 International Work-Study Student Seminar During the summer vacation, two students o f United College participated in the 1969 International Work-Study Student Seminar, one visiting Japan and the other the Philippines. Filipino, Japanese and American universit y students came t o Hong Kong for the same purpose. The Seminar was organized b y th e Student Christian Centre and the Chinese Y . M . C . A. to help students understand different Asian cultural values and problems through contact and sharing o f experie The theme o f th e Seminar was "The Responsibilities o f Asian Students Today". Student Exchange p r o g r a mme During th e summer months th e Chung Ch Student Un i on was host t o a delegation o f four students f r om the Keio University Student Union, and four students of Chung Chi were sent to Keio on an exchange basis. Membershi p o fCommittee s Advisory Committee on Journalism Education and Communications Research M r . G . A. Pilgrim, General Manager o f South China Mo r n i ng Post, has accepted the University's invitation to serve a s a member o f the Advisory Committee o n Journalism Education an d Com Research. Faculty Advisory Committee for Computing Centre The Faculty Advisory Committee fo r th Computing Centre has been reorganized with th e following membership: Chairman: Director o f the Institute o f Science and Technology (Dr. C.T. JointCommittee with HKU on Computer Facilities Prof. Burkart Holzner, Visiting Professor o f Sociology and Director of the Social Survey Research Centre, has been appointed a member o f the Joint Committee of the two local universities on Computer Facilities, to take the place o f Prof. David H . L during his absence until Ma r ch 1970. Working Party on Graduate School Prof. Bruce Glassburner, Associate Director o f the University o f California Study Centre a t this University, has been appointed t o the Chairmanship of the Wo r k i ng Party on the Graduate School. — 10 —
