The squire from Scotland who is being honoured on th is occasion is a p rom inen t member o f his profession, a leading citizen o f the community, and a dedicated suppo rter o f h ighe r education in Hong Kong. The Hon. S. S. Gordon was educated in Glasgow in the fie ld of accountancy. A fte r becoming a f u lly qua lified Chartered Accountant, he jo ined the w e ll-know n firm o f Lowe, B ingham & Matthews in 1947. He became a pa rtne r o f the same firm in 1950 and a senior pa rtne r in 1956. He is a member o f the Ins titu te o f Chartered Accountants of Scotland. G ifted w ith exceptional business acumen, dynamic persona lity and unusual competence, he has p layed an im po rtan t role in the local business commun ity f o r many years. M r. Gordon has served as chairman o f the Hong Kong General Chamber o f Commerce and as a member o f the Cotton A dv iso ry Board, Finance Committee o f the Federa tion o f Hong Kong Industries, and Adv iso ry Board o f the Hong Kong E xpo rt C red it Insurance Corporation. He is chairman o f the Hong Kong B u ild ing and Loan Agency L td . and a d irec to r o f the Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels, L td ., Lane C raw fo rd L td ., and the Hong Kong Land Investment & Agency Co. L td . In add ition to his professional successes, M r. Gordon has been ac tive ly invo lved in numerous commun ity services. H is deep sense of dedica tion and his demonstrated effectiveness in pub lic a ffa irs qu ick ly earned h im recogn ition as one o f Hong Kong's foremost citizens. He was appointed an Uno ffic ia l Justice o f the Peace in 1961 , ab ly served on the Leg isla tive Council between 1962 and 1966 and since th a t time has been a member o f the Executive Council. His selfless services to Hong Kong have tw ice been recognised by He r Ma jesty the Queen: firs t by appo in tmen t in 1965 as an Officer o f the Most Exce llen t O rde r o f the B ritish Emp ire and three years la te r as a Commander o f the B ritish Empire. In the m ids t o f his m y riad activities, M r. Gordon s till finds time and energy to serve Hong Kong's institu tions o f h ighe r education. In add ition to his membership in the Court o f the U n ive rs ity o f Hong Kong, he has rendered inva luab le services to The Chinese U n ive rs ity o f Hong Kong as a member o f the Un ive rsity's Council and its Finance Committee and as Chairman o f the Terms o f Service Committee. He has also rendered inva luab le assistance as Chairman o f the Adviso ry Board o f the L ingnan Ins titu te o f Business A dm in is tra tion .
