In co llabo ra tion w ith his close associate, D r. Chen-N ing Yang, D r. Lee successfully challenged the long-accepted law o f conservation o f pa rity , thus mak ing an h istoric con tribu tion to the know ledge o f the universe and opening up new fro n tie rs o f science. In recogn ition o f his genius, he was awarded, as a co-recipient, the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 , a t the age o f 31. Professor Lee was born in Shanghai, China and received his h ighe r education a t the Na tiona l Chekiang U n ive rs ity in Kwe ichow from 1943 to 1944 and a t the N a tiona l Southwest Associated Un ive rs ity in Kunm ing from 1945 to 1946. He then pursued advanced studies in physics at the U n ive rs ity o f Chicago and was awarded the degree o f Ph.D. in 1950. D r . Lee has a distinguished academic career. A fte r g radua tion from the Un ive rs ity o f Chicago, he was imm ed ia te ly appointed a research associate in astronomy by his un iversity. He la te r jo ined the Un ive rs ity o f C a lifo rn ia as research associate and lec tu re r in physics, and subsequently became a member o f the prestigious Ins titu te fo r Advanced Study a t Princeton. He was appointed by Columbia U n ive rs ity to be assistant professor o f physics in 1953 , associate professor in 1955 and f u ll professor in 1956. He has remained at Columbia except from 1960 to 1963, when he was a professor a t the Ins titu te fo r Advanced Study a t Princeton. He had the unusual honour o f being the Loeb Lectu re r a t H a rva rd U n ive rs ity in 1957 and again in 1964. He is a member o f the Ame rican Na tiona l Academy o f Science and rec ip ien t o f the A lb e rt E instein Aw a rd in Science at Yeshiva Un ive rs ity in 1957. D r. Lee is a close frie n d and adviser to The Chinese U n ive rs ity o f Hong Kong. He has served on its A dv iso ry Board on N a tu ra l Sciences since 1964 , and has been generous in g iv ing advice and guidance in the development o f our academic programme in physics.
