C h o h - H a o L I , p h . d . D r. L i is a p rom in ent chemist and experimental endocrinologist. He has spent t h ir t y years conducting research on hormones, and is esteemed as the w o rld 's foremost a u th o rity on the subject. B o rn of a distinguished fam ily in Canton, Dr. L i firs t intended to study mathematics. Because o f his lik in g fo r a ce rtain professor he changed his m a jo r fie ld to chem istry. He earned the degree o f Bachel o r o f Science from the Un ive rs ity o f Nanking in 1933, and was inv ited to teach chem istry a t his a lm a m a te r a fte r g radua tion In 1935 he entered the U n ive rs ity o f Ca lifo rn ia , Berkeley, and became its firs t graduate student from China to pursue advanced studies in chem istry Three years la te r, he was awarded the degree o f Doctor o f Philosophy w ith fly in g colours. He also received an hono ra ry degree o f Doctor o f Medicine from the Catholic Un ive rs ity o f Chile in 1962. D r. L i has a ric h teaching and research experience. He has been research associate and assistant professor o f experimental bio logy associate professor and then professor o f b iochem istry and professor o f experimen ta l endocrinology since 1950. He has been both Founder and D irec to r o f the famous Hormone Research Labo ra to ry, Berkeley and San Francisco, f o r the past two decades. Numerous honours have been conferred on D r. L i in recognition o f his scientific achievements and contribu tions to mankind. He received the Ciba A w a rd in Endocrino logy in 1947, Guggenheim Fe llowsh ip in 1948, Francis Emory Septennial Prize o f the American Academy o f A rts and Sciences in 1955, A lb e rt Lasker Aw a rd fo r Basic Med ical Research in 1962, Golden P late Aw a rd o f the American Academy o f Achievement in 1964 , and Scientific Achievement Aw a rd o f the Ame rican Med ica l Association in 1970. He was also honoured by appo in tmen t as a F a cu lty Research Lectu re r at the Un ive rsity of C a lifo rn ia , San Francisco, from 1962 to 1963 and as Annua l Lectu re r o f the Japanese Endocrine Society in 1965. D r. L i has been elected to several p rom inen t academic and professional ins titu tions in the U.S.A. and other parts o f the wo rld , in c lu d ing fe llowsh ips in the Ame rican Academy o f A rts and Sciences, the Ame rican Association f o r the Advancement o f Science, and the Academy o f Science. He has also been conferred hono ra ry membership by the A rgen tina Society o f Endocrino log ica l Metabolism, Biology- Society o f Chile, and Academ ia Sinica o f China. D r. L i has been an active member o f the A dv iso ry Board on N a tu ra l Sciences o f The Chinese U n ive rs ity o f Hong Kong since 1964. In th a t capacity, he has g re a tly con tribu ted to the development o f our academic programme in chem istry. He is also the generous donor of the C. H. L i Funds f o r Research in Chem istry a t th is Un ive rsity.
