I e o h - M i n g P E I , m . o f a r c h . M r. Pei is an a rch itec t w ith a w o rld -w ide repu ta tion . His name has been associated w ith numerous m a jo r bu ild ing projects in the Un ited States, in c lud ing the new East B u ild ing o f the Na tiona l G a lle ry o f A rt, Washington, D.C. ; the John F itzge ra ld Kennedy L ib ra ry in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the East-West Center in H o n o lu lu ; the U n ive rs ity Plaza a t New Y o rk U n ive rs ity ; the Na tiona l Center fo r A tmospheric Research in Co lorado ; and the Na tiona l A irline s Te rm ina l a t the John F. Kennedy In te rna tiona l A irp o r t in New Y o rk City, ju s t to mention a few . A fte r his early education in China and Hong Kong, M r. Pei attended universities in the Un ited States. He obtained the degree o f Bachelor o f A rch itec tu re from the Massachusetts Ins titu te o f Technology in 1939 and the degree of Master o f A rch itec tu re from H a rva rd U n ive rs ity in 1946. He practised his profession in Boston and New Y o rk and taugh t a t the H a rva rd Graduate School o f Design from 1945 to 1948. He then served as D irec to r o f the A rch ite c tu ra l D ivision o f the w e ll-known Ame rican firm , Webb & Knapp, Inc. u n til 1955 , when he founded I.M . Pei & Partners in New Y o rk C ity, an in te r n a tio n a lly renowned a rch itec tu ra l firm to th is day, M r . Pei has no t on ly been invo lved in c rea ting new buildings, bu t has also been active ly engaged on several m a jo r urban redevelop ment plans in the Un ited States, especially in the downtown areas o f Boston, Los Angeles , Oklahoma C ity, Cleveland and Ph ilade lph ia . M r. Pei has been honoured by lead ing Ame rican academic and professional bodies, and served on the N a tiona l Council o f Humanities, by P residen tia l appointment, from 1966 to 1970. He is a member o f the Na tiona l Ins titu te o f A rts and Letters, the Na tiona l Academy o f Design, and the U rban Design Council o f the C ity o f New Yo rk . He is a Fe llow o f the Ame rican Ins titu te o f A rch itec ts and o f the Ame rican Academy o f A rts and Sciences. A past member o f several v is iting committees o f M .I . T. and Ha rva rd , he is cu rre n tly serving on the V isua l and Pe rfo rm ing A rts V is itin g Committee o f the Board o f Overseers o f H a rva rd College. He received the A lpha Rho Psi Medal o f the Massachusetts Ins titu te o f Technology, the A rn o ld B runne r A w a rd o f the Na tiona l Ins titu te o f A rts and Letters, and the Medal o f Honou r o f the New Y o rk Chapter o f the Ame rican Ins titu te o f A rch itects. In May o f 1970 the Un ive rs ity o f Pennsylvania conferred the hono ra ry degree o f Doctor o f Fine A rts on him. M r. Pei has given valuable professional advice to The Chinese U n ive rs ity o f Hong Kong on the p lann ing and development o f its new campus site. He visited the campus in November 1966, and has kep t in close touch w ith the physical development o f th is Un ive rsity since then.
