"Having the University Library, the well-functioning heart of a university, The Chinese University, I believe, will develop with more assurance and strength in the near f u t u r e . " The foundation stone of the University Library was laid by His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Trench, on 28th September, 1970. The ceremony was attended by member s of the University Council and the College Boards of Governors/Trustees, members of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, prominent leader s of the community, and members of the staff and student representatives of the University. Sir David was greeted by Dr. Choh-Ming L i, Vice-Chancellor of the University, upon his arrival at the University campus by helicopter. He was escorted to the dais by the Vice-Chancellor; Dr. the Hon. Sir Cho-Yiu Kwan, Chairman of the University Council; Dr. R.C. Lee, Vice-Chairman of the University Council and Chairman of the Campus Planning and Building Committee; Dr. the Hon. Ping-Yuan Tang, Member of the University Council and Donor of the University Library building; and the Hon. W. Szeto, the Architect. In a brief address, delivered in both Chinese and English, the Vice-Chancellor made known the name of the donor of the building, Dr. the Hon.
