Since th en D r. Ph ilips has had a ve ry d istingu ished career b o th in the fie ld o f u n iv e rs ity a dm in is tra tio n and academ ic advancement. He has been Professor o f O rie n ta l H is to ry at the U n iv e rs ity o f L o n d o n fo r the past qua rte r o f a cen tu r y and D ire c to r o f the Schoo l o f O rie n ta l and A fric a n Studies since 1957. In a d d itio n , he was in v ite d to be the M on tague B u rto n L e c tu re r a t the U n iv e rs ity o f Leeds in 1966 and to serve as D e p u ty V ice - C hance llo r o f the U n iv e rs ity o f L o n d o n from 1969 to 1970. H is o u ts tan d in g service in a dm in is tra tio n led to his a p p o in tm e n t as C ha irm an o f the U .G .C . C om m ittee on O rien ta l, A fric a n and Slavonic Studies in the U n ite d K in g d om in 1965 and subsequen tly o f th e U .G .C . C om m ittee on L a tin Am e rican Studies in 1966. In these capacities, D r. Ph ilips has made inva luab le c o n trib u tio n s to the advancement o f th e studies o f the deve loping w o rld . P rofessor P h ilip s ' academ ic achievements have been e qua lly d is tin ­ guished. He h a s been re c ip ie n t , among o the rs, o f the G ladstone M em o ria l F e llow sh ip , the F rew en L o rd Prize o f the R o y a l Em p ire Socie ty, the A le xan de r Prize o f the R o ya l H is to ric a l Soc ie ty, and an h o n o ra ry degree fro m the U n iv e rs ity o f W a rw ick.
