He obtained the B.Sc. degree from the National Tsing Hua Un iversity, China, the M ,A . degree from the Un iversity o f To ron to , Canada, and Ph.D. from the Ca liforn ia In s titu te o f Technology, U.S.A. These a ll combined to prepare him fo r his em inent career and demonstrate how the influence o f the East has blended w ith tha t o f the West in the making o f a prom inent scientist. In 1947 Professor L in embarked on a long and distinguished service w ith the Massachusetts Ins titu te o f Technology , where he has been Ins titu te Professor since 1966. His latest con tribu tion to the w orld o f science is the "D ensity Wave Theo ry" explaining the spiral structure o f Galaxies. In add ition to many distinguished memberships o f scien tific societies, Professor L in is cu rren tly President o f the Society fo r Industria l and Applied Mathematics o f the United States.
