completion. Now the whole process can be done at CUHK. It goeswithout saying that the equipment w ill greatly enhance the teaching and research facilities at CUHK. It w ill also render direct service to the elec tronics industry o f Hong Kong by completing the photomask process here. Indirectly, however, CUHK is training its students to assemble and manipulate the equipment and w ill produce skilled technicians to handle the photorepeater which w ill eventually be adopted by the local industry. In this way CUHK is training personnel for the future demand o f the elec tronics industry. Finally, I would like to add that CUHK has, w ithin the short span o f 14 years, advanced to such a stage that it no longer serves as a bridge between East and West, but is "blending" Eastern and Western cultures to create a new synthesis, thus benefiting and enriching the two great cultural traditions. This comes as a result o f the fullest support from the Hong Kong Government, aids and grants from foreign governments, institutions and founda tions and the wholehearted backing o f the local community, who has unfailingly given CUHK moral and financial support, advice and encouragement, w ith out which CUHK would never have become what it is today. CUHK w ill, o f course, rely on their con tinuous support so as to make steady progress in its teaching and research programmes, finally leading to the realization o f its two distinctive objectives — to blend the Eastern and Western cultures and to render substantial service to the Hong Kong com munity.
