Professor Francis C Johnson Professor Francis C. Johnson was born in Australia in 1934. He read English and History at the Sydney University and Economics at the Queensland University, graduating from these universities with the degrees of B.A. and B.Econ. respectively. He furthered his studies at the University of London, where he obtained the Dip. T E FL and graduated later from the Columbia University with the degrees of M.A., Ed.D. (English Language) and the Professional Diploma in Education. Professor Johnson had been teacher and principal of several schools and teachers colleges in Papua New Guinea. Before joining the University of Papua New Guinea in 1966 as Professor of English Language and Head of English Department, he was the Director of Teacher Training at Papua New Guinea. He left the University of Papua New Guinea in 1973 to work as Senior Staff Consultant of the Hawaii English Project at the University of Hawaii for a year. Since then, he engaged in independant instructional materials writing and served as consultant to numerous universities, colleges of advanced education and departments of education in in-service and pre-service courses in English language teaching. Professor Johnson's publications include books, research reports, instructional materials and journal articles in the fields of English Language and English Language Teaching. Among the titles of books published are English as a Second Language: A n Individ Approach (1973) and Individualizing the Language Classroom (1976). Major sets of instructio materials include the Minenda Books, the Endeavour Reading Programme, the Jacaranda Individua Language Arts Programme, and the Jacaranda Listening Skills Programme. Journal articles and chapters in books have been published in a number of professional and academic journals in Australia, U.S.A., United Kingdom, Singapore and Papua New Guinea. Professor Johnson joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong as Visiting Professor of English in July 1979.
