Seminars • Concerts • Exhibitions * Professor Frank George o f the Department o f Cybernetics, Brunei University, U.K., delivered a lecture on ‘Computers and Cybernetic Society' on 4th August at the invitation o f the Department o f Computer Science. * Professor John Overend o f the Department o f Chemistry, University o f Minnesota, U.S.A., con­ ducted a seminar on ‘Infra-red Spectroscopy o f Surface' on 5th August. The seminar was jo in tly organized by the Departments o f Chemistry and Physics. * The Department o f Chemistry presented a seminar on ‘Recent Advances in Polarization Transfer and Two Dimensional NMR Spectroscopy' on 16th August. The speaker was Professor T.C. Wong o f the Department o f Chemistry, the University o f Missouri- Columbia, U.S.A. * The Department o f Geography presented a Workshop on Remote Sensing from 18th to 20th August. The Workshop comprised demonstrations and presentations, and public lectures by specialists from the University o f North Dakota and the Univer­ sity o f Hawaii, U.S.A., and the Asian Regional Remote Sensing Training Centre, Thailand. * Professor I .0. Sutherland o f the Robert Robinson Laboratories, Department o f Organic Chemistry o f the University o f Liverpool, England, delivered a lecture on ‘Macropolycyclic Compounds as Host Molecules' on 19th August under the sponsor­ ship o f the Department o f Chemistry. * Professor Shie-ming Peng o f the Department o f Chemistry, National Taiwan University, spoke on 'Coordination Complexes with Delocalized Ground State' on 22nd August at the invitation o f the Department o f Chemistry. * The Institute o f Chinese Studies held a seminar on Modem Chinese Intellectual Thought on 30th August. * The Institute o f Chinese Studies presented a seminar on ‘A Preliminary Study of the "Revo lutionary Diplomacy" in the 1930's' on 31st August. The speaker was Dr. Lee En-han o f the Department o f Chinese Studies, National University o f Singapore. * The Fifth Annual Conference of the HongKong Society o f Neuroscience was held at the University on 6th and 7th September. It consisted o f five plenary lectures given by world-renowned neuroscientists from Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. * Professor N.C. Yang o f the Department o f Chemistry, the University o f Chicago, U.S.A., con ducted a seminar on 'The Chemistry o f Nucleic Acid' , which was presented by the Department o f Chemistry on 14th September. * A seminar on Comparative Studiesin Communi­ cation was held on 16th September under the jo in t sponsorship o f the Department o f Journalism and Communication, the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies and the International Asian Studies Pro­ gramme. Speakers o f the Seminar were Professor Alex Edelstein o f the School o f Communications, University o f Washington, and Professor HansMathias Kepplinger o f the Institute o f Publizistik, Universitat Mainz , who delivered lectures on ‘New Variables for Public Opinion Research' and ‘The Influence of Camera Perspectives on the Perception of a Politician by Supporters, Opponents, and Neutral Viewers' respectively. * The Department o f Chemistry presented a seminar on ‘The Use of Transition Metal Catalysts in Organic Synthesis' on 19th September. The speaker was Dr. P.W. Jolly o f Max-Planck-Institut fur Kohlenforschung (Coal Research). * The Institute o f Chinese Studies presented a seminar on ‘The Study of the Oracle Records o f the Shang Dynasty' on 21st September.
