* The Institute o f Chinese Studies held a seminar on ‘The T'ien Culture of Yunnan' on 29th September. The speaker was Professor Tong En-zheng o f the History Department (Archaeology), Szechuan Uni versity. * Professor Erik Lundberg, a world-renowned Swedish Economist, arrived in Hong Kong on 29th September w ith Mrs. Lundberg for a two-month visit to New Asia College as its first Ming-Yu Foundation Professor and Visiting Professor. During his visit, he conducted a series o f eight seminars on Present Inter­ national Economic Problems in a Historical Setting. He gave a public lecture on ‘What is Wrong w ith the World Economy?' on 27th October. Professor Lundberg was Professor o f Economics at the Stockholm School o f Economics, President o f the Royal Swedish Academy o f Science and Chairman o f the Nobel Prize Committee in Economics. He is at present engaged in a study o f the world economic order. The New Asia Ming-Yu Foundation Professor­ ship was established in March 1982 through the generosity o f Dr. Tsai Ming-yu, an international financier based in Japan, who donated US$1 m illion to the College to set up the Foundation. * The Third Seminar on Legal Systemand State- Building in China, organized by the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies, was held from 30th September to 1st October. About fo rty participants took part in the Seminar, at which eight papers were presented. * A symposium on ‘Youth Problems in Hong Kong and in Germany', jo in tly organized by the Centre for Hong Kong Studies o f the University and the Goethe Institute, was held on 3rd October. The Symposium was intended to contribute to a better understanding o f youth problems in Hong Kong and Germany and help facilitate intellectual exchanges between the two countries. Speakers at the Symposium included three professors from Germany: Professor Gunther Kaiser, Professor o f Law, Max-Planck Institute for Foreign and Inter national Court Law; Professor Horst E. Richter, Professor o f Psychosomatic Medicine, University o f Giessen; Professor Andreas Flitner, Professor o f Pedagogy, University o f Tubingen; as well as three members o f this University: Dr. Agnes Ng and Mr. Alex Tang o f the Department o f Social Work, and Dr. Tak-Shing Cheung o f the Department o f Sociology. * Dr. Hirsh Cohen, Consultant to the Director o f Research, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, gave a public lecture on 'Management in Creative Research' on 4th October. The lecture was jo in tly organized by the Institute o f Social Studies and the United College. * The United College organized a four-week Chinese Cultural Festival, commencing 4th October, to celebrate its twenty-seventh anniversary. Activities o f the Festival included demonstration o f Chinese calligraphy and painting by Professor Jao Tsung-i, Mr. Shaw Lip Sheng, Mr. Cheng Ming andMr. Lee Yun Woon; lectures on 'Classical Poetry —from the m ild and pliant to the derisive and abusive' by Mr. So Man Jock , on 'The Contemporary Experiences in New Chinese Poetry' by Mr. Yu Kwang Chung, and on ‘The Part Played by Matteo Ricci in the Trans mission o f Scientific and Technological Knowledge' by Professor P.Y. Ho o f the University o f Hong Kong; exhibitions o f Chinese information processing system, Chinese snuff bottles, ancient Chinese science, Chinese music, and Chinese calligraphy and painting; com­ petitions in calligraphy, poetry reading, chess, couplet; and performances o f Chinese arts, etc. * Mr. Wang Shi-xiang, Research Fellow o f the Bureau o f Preservation o f Archaeological Material, Ministry o f Culture, Beijing, was invited by the Institute o f Chinese Studies to deliver the following lectures: 'Furniture o f Ancient China' on 6th October, and ‘Ancient Chinese Lacquer' on 13th October. * Dr. Lo Shui-yin o f School o f Physics, Melbourne University, delivered a public lecture on 'The Advan tage o f Chinese from the View o f Information Theory' on 18th October. * The Department o f Chemistry organized a seminar on 'Structural Analysis of Vinyl and Acryl Copolymers by Circular Dichroism' on 19th October. The speaker was Professor F. Ciardelli o f Universadi Pisa, Italy. * The New Asia S.Y. Chung Visiting Fellow o f 1983, Professor He Lin, Director o f History o fWestern Philosophy Research Centre, the Chinese Academy o f Social Sciences, Beijing, arrived at New Asia College w ith Mrs. He on 21st October. Professor He is a leading scholar on Hegel's philosophy and Neo-Confucian philosophy. During his month-long visit, he delivered two lectures entitled ‘My current understanding on Hegel's Philosophy' and 'A Matter o f Knowing and Practising in Harmony' on 2nd and 7th November respectively. 28 ACADEMIC/CULTURAL EVENTS
