However, they are often ignorant o f what others in the same faculty or even the same depart ment are doing as there is little communication in this respect. Apart from the training o f secondary teachers, the other main role o f the School o f Education is to conduct educational research. As there is in fact no such academic discipline as Education but the application o f Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, linguistics, History and Philosophy, etc. to the field o f education, teachers o f the School are applying the methodology o f these various disciplines to study the education-related issuesw ithin their own speciality. As a result, the need to go beyond their own discipline and to improve communication is even greater for members o f the School o f Education. We therefore proposed to the Higher Degree, Research and Publication Committee o f the School to organize some informal staff seminars to facilitate the exchange o f views and ideas. These seminars are restricted to members o f the School. A t these meetings, usually during lunch hour on Wednesdays, a colleague gives an account o f his recent research, which is followed by questions and discussions. In the last academic year, eleven meetings were held. Topics discussed ranged from Psychology, Sociology, linguistics to History, fu lly reflecting the faculty's diversity o f interest: S.C. Cheng Cognitive Processing o f Chinese Children L.F. Lo Research on Physical Activities and Quality o f L ife in Densely Populated Areas M.C.L. Lam The Importance o f the Position o f Determiner-classifier in Self- embedded Sentences in Can tonese B.H.K. Luk The Concept o f Literacy and Literacy o f the Common People in the Ming and Qing Dynasties S.Y.P. Chung The Effect o f Education on Family L ife in Hong Kong B.L. Tso Language Awareness Research A t the end o f the academic year, feedbacks were received from colleagues. It is clear that such informal staff seminars are popular and should be continued. - B.H.K.L . , E.S.C.T.&N.W.Y. ACADEMIC/CULTURAL EVENTS 31
