Seminars • Concerts • E xh ib it ion * The Department of Chemistry has organized the following seminars: 'Introduction of Carbon- Substituents into C-4 o f 2-Azetidmones —The Sandoz Experience' conducted by Dr. C.P. Mak, Group Leader of Sandoz Research Institute, Vienna on 16th December, 1983; and 'Some Recent Studies in Fast Atom Bombardment Mass Spectrometry' by Professor Hei Wun Leung of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing on 20th January, 1984. * Chung Chi College held its Annual Conference on 3rd January, 1984 with the theme of ‘The Role o f Intellectuals in Changing Hong Kong'. Guest speakers of the Conference were the Hon. Allen Lee, Dr. Henry M.H. Huang and Mr. Lao Yung Wei. * United College's Annual Workshop w ith the theme of 'Computer in Our Lives' was held on 5th January. The day's programme included the following lectures: ‘Computer and Social Development' by Dr. Paul Kwong of the Sociology Department; 'Chinese Computer' by Professor S.C. Loh of the Computer Science Department; 'The Prospects of Computer Education in Hong Kong' by Dr. Stanislaus Hu of the Computer Services Centre; 'The Second Industrial Revolution' by Professor T.C. Chen of the Computer Science and Electronics Departments. * Professor Paul Jiang, Chairman of Chinese Studies, Macquarie University, Australia, delivered a lecture entitled ‘On the Theological Foundation o f "U n ity between Heaven and the Man" in Sung-Ming Neo-Confucian Philosophy' on 13th February. The lecture was organized by the Department of Philosophy. ❖ * * * The Chinese University Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Harrison C. Ryker, performed at the Chung Chi College Assembly on 17th February. The Department of Music organized the following activities: * Concert of the Tononi String Quartet on 12th January, playing works by Mozart, Janacek and Beethoven. * Students' Ensemble Concert on 26th January. * Lecture-Recital on 15th February by Paul Brodie, renowned Canadian Saxophonist. * A talk by Meirion Bowen together with Sir Michael Tippett on his music on 17th February. The lecture was coordinated with the Hong Kong Arts Festival. * Guitar master class by Alice Artzt, an internationally-known American guitarist, on 21st February. * Vocal recital by local tenor Sam Lau on 29th February, with Josephine Cheung at the piano. * * * * The University Library mounted an exhibition of publications by faculty members of the University from 16th to 26th January to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the University.
