Twenty-Seventh Congregation - Conferment of Honorary Degrees and Higher Degrees A man o f letters, a scholar, a leader in the comm un ity, a justice and a successful businessman were the honorary graduates o f the University this year. Over a thousand guests witnessed the conferment o f the degrees to the em inent five on 18th October at the Twenty-seventh Congregation, at which His Excellency the Chancellor, Sir Edward Youde presided. Mr. L i Fei-kan (Ba Jin) from Mainland China and Professor W illiam Watson from the United K ingdom were awarded the degree o f D o c to r o f Literature, h o n o r i s causa, the Hon. Lyd ia Dunn and the Hon. Mr. Justice T .L . Yang the degree o f D oc to r o f Laws, honor is causa, and Mr. L i Dak-sum the degree o f D octo r o f Social Science, honor i s causa. The ir citations were w ritten by the Public O rator, Dr. F.C. Chen. Dr. the Hon. T .L . Yang addressed the Congregation on behalf o f the honorary graduates. This Congregation, held at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, was also fo r the conferment o f higher degrees. A ltogethe r, 168 Docto r's and Master's degrees were conferred on the graduates: fo u r Doctors o f Philosophy, sixty Masters o f Philosophy, one Master o f A rts, thirteen Masters o f A rts (Education), one Master o f D iv in ity , seven Masters o f Social Work, and seventy-three Masters o f Business A dm in istra tion . The fou r Doctors o f Philosophy were: Mr. Fung Y iu-m ing and Mr. Lau K in-m ing (bo th o f the Chinese Studies D ivision), Mr. Chan Chok-ki (Electronics), and Mr. Wong Sai-peng (Physics). NEWS 1
