has generously made us the present donation which has rendered possible the rapid development of the University. The impact of Sir Run Run's gift will be far-reaching. Not only will it contribute to meeting the need for talent in our community, but it will also be an important milestone in the history of higher education in Hong Kong. Shaw College will be built on 4.5 hectares of land at the northern part of the campus next to Chek Nei Ping. Site formation work has already started and it is expected that most of the major buildings will become operational in two years' time. The facilities in the new College will be similar to those of the three existing constituent Colleges. There will be teaching blocks, offices, reading rooms, computer laboratories, canteens, large lecture theatres as well as other amenities. Apart from undergraduates, student hostels in the new College will also accommodate postgraduate and exchange students. Organized along similar lines as the three existing Colleges, Shaw College, however, will have its own distinctive features. For instance, courses on science and technology would be emphasized, and extensive computer facilities would be available to students. When the College starts operation in 1988, its community would include staff and students from the existing Faculties in the University as well as new students admitted to the University that year. The Planning Committee The University Council has approved on 5th February that a Planning Committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor to work out details for establishing the new College. The composition of the Planning Committee is: Dr. Ma Lin (Chairman) Professor Baysung Hsu (Deputy Chairman) Mr. Vincent Chen Professor D.C. Lau Dr. Ng Lee-ming Dr. Yue-chim Wong Mr. T.L . Tsim (Secretary) The Committee may coopt up to six other members on such terms and for such duration as determined by the Committee. The terms of reference of the Planning Committee (1) To advise and make recommendations to the Council on (a) the amendment of Ordinance, (b) the draft Constitution to be adopted by the fourth College, and 2 NEWS
