News in Brief Welcoming Reception in Honour o f Distinguished Professor-at-Large A welcoming reception was given by the Council Chairman, Dr. the Hon. Q.W. Lee, and the Vice- Chancellor, Dr. Ma Lin, on 28th April in honour of Professor C.N. Yang, who arrived a day before to assume his office as Distinguished Professor-at-Large of the University. Among the two hundred guests at the reception were Sir David Akers-Jones, Chief Secretary of Hong Kong; Mr. Xu Jiatun, Director of the local branch of Xinhua News Agency; and Pro fessor Zhou Peijuan, President of Chinese Scientific and Technological Association. Both the Vice- Chancellor and Professor Yang addressed the guests. Professor Yang is expected to spend four months in the University. As Distinguished Professor- at-Large, he will be involved in teaching and research, as well as providing leadership for general academic advancement in the University. Council Membership The following persons have been elected or re-elected members of the University Council: * Dr. Ho Tim, elected by the Board of Trustees of The United College, for the unexpired period of membership of the Hon. Peter Poon Wing-cheung from 24th October, 1985 to 15th March, 1986. * Mr. Li Fook-hing, re-elected by the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College, for a further term of three years from 11th February, 1986. University Health Service Management Committee A University Health Service Management Committee has been established. The following staff members have been appointed to the Committee from 1st April, 1986 to 31st July , 1988: Chairman: Professor Leung Ping-chung Members: Professor Stuart P. Donnan Dr. Robert Teoh Professor RancePui-leung Lee Dr. Ng Lee-Ming Director of the University Health Service (ex-officio) Director of Student Affairs (ex-officio) Secretary: Mr. Yiu Kai Chiu The Committee is responsible for advising the Vice-Chancellor on policy and professional matters in relation to the management and operation of the University Health Service. UPGCMedical Sub-Committee Visits the University The Medical Sub-Committee of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee (UPGC), accompanied by staff of the UPGC Secretariat, visited the Faculty of Medicine on 18th February. They had meetings with staff of the Faculty and of the Government's Medical and Health Department as well as with stu dents. Representatives of the Faculty of Medicine also had another meeting with the Medical Sub- Committee at the UPGC office on 19th February to discuss postgraduate medical education and training. New Members o f Advisory Boards/ Committees The following new members have been invited by the Vice-Chancellor to serve on various advisory boards/ committees of the University: * Mr. H.S. Watt, Engineering Training Manager of the Hong Kong Telephone Co. Ltd., as a member of the Advisory Committee on Electronics for a term until 31st December, 1987. * Mr. Paul Ng, Chairman of the Three-Year MBA Association, as an ex-officio member of the Advisory Board of the Three-Year MBA Programme. * Mr. Simon Kwan, Director of Simon Kwan & Associates , as a member of the Management Com mittee of the Art Gallery for a term until 31st Decem ber, 1988. University Members Serve on Outside Committees (1) The following members, of the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various committees, boards and councils: * Dr. Richard M.W. Ho, Lecturer in Chinese, appointed as a member of the Regional Council from 1st April, 1986 to 31st March, 1987. * Dr. Richard M.W. Ho and Professor David Gwilt, Professor of Music, reappointed asmembers of the Council for the Performing Arts from 1st April, 1986 to 31st March, 1988. Dr. Leung Pui Kam, Lecturer in Chinese, ap pointed as a member of the Council for the same term of office. * Professor S.T. Chang, Professor of Biology, reappointed as amember of the Agricultural Products Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee and theMarine Fish Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee for a further term of one year with effect from 1st April, 1986. * Dr. Ho Kam-fai, Director of the Department of Extramural Studies, appointed as amember of the Po Leung Kuk Advisory Board for a term of three years, and amember of the Television Advisory Board for a term of two and a half years, both effective 1st April, 1986.
