Signing on behalf of the two parties con­ cerned were the Deputy Secretary of the Academia Sinica, Madam Hu Qiheng, and the Secretary of the University, Dr. Fong-ching Chen. The exchange agreement, effective May 1986 for a term of three years, enables various research institutes and departments of the Academia Sinica and the University to further develop collaborative programmes on exchange of visits, organization of seminars and scientific research activities. Located in Room 428, Fung King Hey Building, the Reference Room is open from 9:30a.m. to 12:30 p.m ., Mondays to Fridays. Newspapers, periodicals, and yearbooks relevant to the SEZs are available for interested members of the University and the public. Visiting Scholars o f the Colleges * Professor Liu Ts'un-yan, Professor Emeritus of Chinese, Australian National University, arrived in Hong Kong on 12th March for a two-week visit to Chung Chi College as its 1985-86 Siu Lien ling Wong Visiting Fellow. * Two New Asia College S.Y. Chung Visiting Fellows came to the College on March and April: Professor Wang Yao, Professor of the Chinese Department of Peking University, and a renowned scholar in contemporary Chinese literature, arrived in Hong Kong on 1st March with his wife for a month- long visit to the College. Mr. Chiang Chao-Shen, Vice-President of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, came to the College on 21st April with his wife for a fortnight's visit, * Three New Asia College Ming Yu Visiting Scholars visited the College in April and May: Professor Li You-yi, an renowned international scholar in Tibetology, visited the College from 10th to 16th April. Professor Hu Jingzhi, Professor of Chinese literature and Criticism, Peking University, andChair man of the Department of Chinese, Shenzhen Univer sity, paid a month-long visit to the College from 2nd April to 2nd May. Professor Dong Fureng, Director of the Institute of Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, visited the University from 3rd to 7th May. * Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Professor of Econ omics, Stanford University, arrived at United College on 23rd March for a two-week visit as the College's 1986 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. CUStudents Win Intervarsity Debate The Chinese University of Hong Kong Debating Team captured the winning title at the fifteenth Bank of America Intervarsity Debating Contest which took place at the University of Hong Kong on 22nd Feb ruary. The team won a Champion Trophy, a Bank of America Scholarship for Research Projects of HK$10,000 and a Debating Award of HK$5,000. Mr. Mak Chun Wa , a second-year student in English, of the team was elected the best debater. The Univer sity's team spoke for the motion 'That the Indiffer ence to Politics on the Part of Local Residents is a Major Factor in the Stability and Prosperity Hitherto Enjoyed by Hong Kong'. Adjudicators for the debate were Mr. Louis Cha, Mrs. Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai, Mr. C.Y. Leung, the Hon. Justice Simon F.S. Li, andMr. Samuel N. Tsien. The annual Bank of America Intervarsity De bating Contest was first instituted in 1972 to stimulate intellectual pursuits among undergraduates and to encourage friendly cooperation between the two local universities. Obituary Dr. Lu Ping-chuan, Senior Lecturer in Music, passed away on 15th March, 1986 at the age of fifty-seven. Dr. Lu joined the University in 1980 as Lecturer in Music and was promoted Senior Lecturer in August 1985. He had served as Director of the Chinese Music Archive since 1980. NEWS 13
