In making the announcement, Dr. the Hon. Q.W. Lee, Chairman o f the Council, praised Dr. Ma for his many outstanding contributions to the University during his Vice- Chancellorship. In particular, Pr. Ma had, following the reorganization o f the University set in motion by the Report o f the Second Fulton Commission in 1976 , brought the University together into an integrated framework; had overseen the successful build-up o f the new Medical Faculty, which would see its first batch o f medical graduates this year; had instituted a major revision o f the undergraduate curriculum; and had also been instru mental in the founding o f a new College —Shaw College —within the University. Dr. Lee revealed that Dr. Ma originally wished to retire in 1985 at the normal age o f sixty, but was persuaded by the Council and staff members to accept a two-year extension o f service until 1987. Out o f respect for his personal wish, the Council had acceded with the greatest reluctance to Dr. Ma's request that his term o f office should not be further extended. Dr. Ma first joined the University in January 1965 as a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry, was appointed Reader o f Biochemistry in 1972 and then Professor o f Biochemistry in 1973. He was appointed to the Vice-Chancellorship o f the University in October 1978 , succeeding Dr. C.M. Li, the founding Vice-Chancellor. When he retires next year, Dr. Ma w ill have completed more than twenty-two years o f distinguished service to the Univer sity, with the last nine years as the Vice-Chancellor. After his retirement, Dr. Ma w ill continue to be associated w ith the University as the Chairman o f the Planning Committee o f Shaw College. A search committee has been formed in accordance with the Statutes o f the Univer sity to advise the Council on the appointment o f a new Vice-Chancellor. 2 NEWS
