* The Department of History presented a public lecture on ‘The Search for Democracy by Political Figures in Modem China' by Professor Yu Yanguang, Department of History, Jinan University, Guangzhou, on 18th March. * The Department of Journalism and Communi cation presented a lecture on ‘Freedom versus Order: Reconciling the New International Information Order with liberation Thought' by Dr. Achal Mehra, Assist ant Editor of Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, on 19th March. * New Asia College S.Y. Chung Visiting Scholars delivered the following lectures: — 'The Historical Link between Contemporary and Classical Chinese literature' by Professor Wang Yao, Professor of the Department of Chinese, Peking University, on 20th March. — ‘On Chinese Scholars' Paintings' by Mr. Chiang Chao-shen, Vice-President of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, on 25th April. * New Asia College Ming Yu Visiting Scholars delivered the following lectures: 一 ‘Current Situation of Tibet and Tibetology' by Professor Li You-yi, Chairman of the Department of Minority Nationality Studies, Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, on 15th April. — 'Evolution and Prospects of Contemporary Aesthetics in China' by Professor Hu Jingzhi, Professor of Chinese Literature andCriticism, Peking University, and Chairman of the Department of Chinese, Shenzhen Univer sity, on 23rd April. This lecture was jointly organized by the College, the Comparative literature Research Unit of the Department of English and the Department of Philos ophy. — 'Theory and Problems in Socialist Economic Development' by Professor Dong Fureng, Director, Institute of Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, on 5th May. * The China's Special Economic Zones Data and Research Unit, Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies, presented the following lectures: — 'The Present and Future of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone' by Professor Wang Luolin, Vice-President of Xiamen University, on 24th March. — ‘Shekou: A Test Tube of China's OpenPolicy and Reforms' by Mr. Yuan Geng, Executive Vice-Chairman of China Merchants Group, and Director of Administration of Shekou Industrial Zone, on 6th May. * The United College presented: - A series of three Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lectures on 'Does the Sum Behave Like Its Parts?' by Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Professor of Economics, Stanford University, and the College's 1986 Distin guished Visiting Scholar. The topics of the lectures were: (1) 'Relationships among Macro Variables' (25th March) (2) ‘Identifying the Parts from the Sum' (27th March) (3) 'Models of Macro and Micro Behaviour' (2nd April) 一 A seminar on ‘Recent Reforms in China's Economic System' on 3rdApril. The panelists were Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Mr. Robert Delfs, specialist writer in Chinese Economy for the FarEastern Economic Review, andDr. Kueh Yak-yeow and Dr. Sung Yun-wing of the EconomicsDepartment of this University. —A public lecture on ‘A Video-Computer Aided English Course' by Professor Huang Jun, Associate Professor of the Foreign Languages Department, Jinan University, Guangzhou, and the College's Resident Fellow, on 18th April. * The Department of Translation organized three public lectures by Professor Peter Newmark, Visiting Professor of the Polytechnic of Central London and the Universities of Surrey and Bradford, and Vice- President of the Institute of Linguists, U.K.: — 'What Translation Theory Is About?' (25th March); — 'How to Analyse aText' (1st April); and — 'Thought, SpeechandTranslation' (8th April) * The 1986 Sports Science Conference entitled 'Sports for the Masses' was held on 12th and 13th April. The conference was jointly organized by the Physical Education Unit, the Department of Ortho paedic and Traumatic Surgery, and the Department of Extramural Studies, andsponsoredby TheAmateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong.
