opening of Hang SengHall Hang SengHall, anew student hostel located on Resi dence Road in. the northern part of the University campus, was formally opened on 8th May by Dr. S.H. Ho, Honorary Chairman of the Hang Seng Bank Ltd. About 150 guests attended the ceremony. The construction of Hang Seng Hall has been made possible by agenerous donation ofHK$3million from the Hang Seng Bank Ltd., and a grant of over HK$8 million by the Government. At the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ma Lin , mentioned that five of the student hostel projects of the University had been supported by Dr. Ho and the Hang Seng Bank Ltd. in the past thirteen years. They are Bethlehem Hall, Xuesi Hall, Madam S.H. Ho Hall, Madam S.H. Ho Hostel for Medical Students, and the present Hang Seng Hall. These five hostels provide accommodation for 1,076 students, which accounts for 44.4% of the total boardingcapac ity for undergraduates of the University. Dr. Ma also remarked, ‘It is completely fitting and significant to name this hostel "Hang SengHall". On the one hand, it serves to perpetuate the long-standing friendly relations between Hang Seng Bank and the University, on the other, it expresses the University's heartfelt gratitude to its benefactor'. Dr. Ho also addressed the gathering. He said, ‘We are familiar with the saying “ It takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred to rear a person". Educa tion is a long-term and difficult job. It plays animpor tant role in the course of social development . . . . Members of the Hang Seng Bank are most honoured to have the chance to contribute to the construction of the "Hang Seng Hall" of United College, which will provide better living conditions for more students on campus'. Hang Seng Hall is a seven-storey building with a gross area of 4,095 square metres. It will provide accommodation for 300 students, all in double rooms. Basic facilities in the building include pentries and washrooms on every floor, as well as a music room, a typing room, agames room, a tuck shop and alarge common room that can be partitioned into small rooms.
