Higher Degree Graduates A total o f ninety-nine valid questionnaires were collected from higher degree graduates. Of all the respondents, seventy-eight (78.8%) had commenced work, eighteen (18.2%) were engaged in further studies and three (3%) were s till seeking suitable employment at the time o f analysis. As regards factors which helped them to obtain their present jobs, 32.1% cited having taken relevant courses at university, 17.9% cited favourable academic results, and 16.7% the fact that they had relevant working experience. Those who encountered d iffi culties attributed them to the lack o f relevant working experience (32.1%), inadequate English (7.7%) and inadequate interview techniques (6.4%). Eighteen (25%) higher degree graduates (ex cluding MBA graduates) pursued further studies (29.1% in 1984). Over 70% o f them were from the science divisions. Some 45% received financial aid in the form o f scholarships, and six were on fu ll scholar ships. Of those who were in employment, about 61% were engaged in teaching either in secondary or te rti ary educational institutions. Some 25%were employed in the business sector while roughly 6%were working in the civil service. Most o f the graduates (86.3%) received a monthly salary above HK$6 , 000 , and some o f them, who had previous working experience, were earning over $10,000 per month. A t the time o f analysis, 17.6% o f the graduates had held more than one job since graduation. Roughly 55% o f them expressed a general satisfaction w ith their present employment. The vast majority o f the two-year MBA gradu ates who responded to the survey entered the com merce and industry sector (88.9%). The survey revealed that the 1985 MBA graduates, unlike their predecessors in 1984 who were diversified in the choice o f careers, confined themselves to a relatively smaller variety o f career fields. Over 90% o f these graduates took up positions in the following fields: banking (40.8%), marketing (37%) and adminis tration/management (14.8%). Roughly 78% o f them started w ith a monthly salary over HK$5,500. More than 70% o f them were satisfied w ith their current employment. Over half o f the MBA graduates were offered employment as early as May and by the end o f July, 77.8% had commenced work. The average number of appointment offers received by the MBA graduates was two. A little over 7% were in their second job at the time o f analysis. Diplomates o f the School o f Education Teaching continued to be the major outlet for the diplomates (93.5%). Most o f them were teaching in government or aided secondary schools. The starting salary for more than half o f them (50.6%) was in the range o f $6,501 to %7,500 per month. Roughly 56% o f the diplomates expressed satisfaction w ith their current employment. About 38% o f the diplomates reported that in obtaining their current employment, having taken relevant courses at university had been valuable.
