Special Fund to Support Research on Social Problems A half-m illion dollar endowment fund, known as the 'Tan Jen Chiu Fund for Research on Social Problems', has been set up in the University to support research projects and activities conducted by the Departments o f Sociology and Social Work on social problems in Hong Kong. A t a brief ceremony held at the University on 21st May, Madam Tan Jen Chiu, donor o f the fund, formally presented the cheque to the Vice-Chancellor. Annual interest o f the fund w ill be allocated by a special funding committee to be established under the Centre for Hong Kong Studies. Madam Tan has had a lifelong interest in social services. She is presently Honorary President o f the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association, Executive Committee member o f the Society o f Boys' Centre and Board member o f the International Asso ciation o f Volunteer E ffort. G ifts to University L ib ra ry System * The Government o f Canadahas recently donated to the University a set o f Canadian Encyclopaedia, which was received by Mr. Lee Chik-fong, Sub librarian, at a brief presentation officiated by Mr. M.D. Copithome, Commissioner for Canada, on 8th July. The Encyclopaedia includes some three m illion words o f text and 1,600 illustrations, mostly in colour, and is the only comprehensive Canadian encyclopaedia published in more than two decades. * The Shun H ing Education and Charity Fund has pledged an annual grant o f HK $20,000 to the University towards its library acquisition fund. The 1986 grant w ill enable the University's lib ra ry System to further enhance its expanding science collection. The Shun King Group has in the past rendered continuing support to the University through the donation o f a number o f student scholarships as well as equipment to the Faculty o f Medicine. Training Course Jo in tly Organized w ith Beijing University The Department o f Marketing and International Business o f this University and the Faculty o f Econ omics, Beijing University , jo in tly conducted asix-week 'Senior Executive Training Course in Foreign Trade Management' in Beijing from 12th July to 21st August. Three lecturers o f this University and experts from Beijing University and China's foreign trade departments gave lectures on theories and develop ments o f Chinese and foreign economic management as well as decision making on management o f Chinese and foreign enterprises. Attending the course were 120 executives from foreign trade departments, companies, factories,mines as well as teachers o f economics in institutions of higher learning from various provinces, prefectures and counties.
