Chung Visiting Scholar of the College, on 24th January. * The Japanese Studies Section organized a lecture on 'Japanese Literature and War' by Mrs. Xiao Qian on 13th January. * The Department of Chemistry organized the following seminars: — 'Teaching Structural Chemistry' conducted by Professor Zhou Gongdu, Department of Chemistry, Peking University, on 16th Jan uary. — ‘Total Synthesis of Macrolide , conducted by Dr. Hak Fun Chow, Department of Chem istry, Oxford University, on 23rd January. — ‘Unstable Tautomers of Heterocyclic Com pounds' conducted by Professor B. Capon, Department of Chemistry, University of Hong Kong, on 20th February. * The China's SEZs Data and Research Unit of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies organized the following lectures: — Professor Chang Yuanyuan, a well-known Chinese economist, gave two public lectures: (1) 'Financial Reform in China's Special Economic Zones' (19th January); and (2) 'The Development Strategy of Zhuhai in the Zhujiang River Delta' (20th Jan uary). - Professor Zeng Muye, Vice-President and Director of the Institute of Economics, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, and Deputy Chairman, Guangdong Society of Special Economic Zones, gave two lectures: (1) 'New Pace of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone' (23rd February); and (2) 'Experience of the Shantou Special Economic Zone' (24th February). * The Department of Government and Public Administration organized the following lectures: — 'The Development of Chinese Legal Educa tion' by Professor Duanmu Zheng, Chairman of the Department of Law, Zhongshan University, and member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee, on 20th January. The lecture was jointly organized with the Chinese Law Programme of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies. — 'American Students in the 1980s' by Mr. Paul Harold, Senator of Massachusetts State, USA, on 23rd February. This lecture was jointly organized with the Society of Govern­ ment and Public Administration. * New Asia College, the Department of Anthro­ pology and the Department of Sociology jointly organized a public lecture on 'Recent Development of Rural China' on 21st January. The speaker was Professor Fei Xiao-tong, a renowned sociologist and Professor of Peking University and Central Institute for Minority Nationalities. * United College held its 1987 Annual Workshop, on ‘The Pursuit of Ideal — from Campus to Com­ munity', on 24th January. The Panelists included Dr. Chen Te, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Dr. Paul S.N. Lee, Lecturer in Journalism and Communication, Mr. Andrew W.F. Wong, Lecturer in Government and Public Administration, and Miss K.F. Cheung, News Editor, Pai Shing Semi-monthly. * The Department of Accounting and Finance organized the following lectures: — 'Lease Financing' by Mr. F. Dubost, Managing Director of Locasuez (Asia) Ltd., on 12th February. — 'International Lending' by Mr. Luc Debieuvre, Assistant Director of Indosuez Asia Ltd., on 26th February. * The Department of Music organized: — A lecture on 'Church Music Tomorrow' by Dr. Ingeline Nielsen, organist and music director at the Ecumenical Centre, head­ quarters of the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland, on 23rd February. — A Louis Chen Zheng Music Appreciation on 27th February. * An Oriental Ink Painting Exhibition, organized by the Department of Extramural Studies and pre sented by The Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, was mounted from 5th January to 3rd February at the Institute. The Exhibition was formally opened by Dr. T.K. Ann, Dr. Ho Kam-fai, Director of the EMSD, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, Consul General of Japan, and Mr. Jae-Choon Kim, Consul General of Korea. A total of seventy-eight exhibits, including works by painters of mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, were on display. ACADEMIC/CULTURAL EVENTS 21
