S h aw Co l l ege — the F o u r t h Co l l ege The University which was founded in 1963 w ith the three original Colleges as an institution o f higher learning w ill soon have a fourth college. Named Shaw College after its benefactor, the new College was made possible by the generosity o f Sir Run Run Shaw, CBE, LLD , DSSc, Chairman o f the Shaw Foundation Hong Kong lim ited which has made a donation o f $100 m illion to the University for the purpose. The College, soon to be under construction, w ill be open to students and staff in September 1988. An ordinance which gives legal effect to this new and very exciting development in the University was passed by the Legislative Council in July 1986 and became law on 1st August the same year. A Board o f Trustees o f Shaw College has accordingly come into being and, together w ith the Planning Committee for Shaw College appointed by the University Council, is charting the course o f the College's development. The Planning Committee, in turn, is advised by Dr. the Hon. Q.W. Lee, Dr. T.K. Ann, Mr. H.J. Shen and Mr. Louis Page. The importance o f the Colleges in contributing to a fu ll and varied university education cannot be over emphasized. While the University has provided formal instruction to students, the Colleges have taken an active part in student-orientated teaching. They have been, moreover, instrumental in developing the students' cultural interests and involving them in extracurricular activities. Over the years, the student population in the University has been growing steadily and today each o f the three original Colleges has between 1 , 700 and 1,800 students. The University, therefore, has felt for some time the need for expanding College facilities in order to cope w ith the growing student numbers. In the normal course o f events, this expansion would have taken many years, given the competition amongst worthwhile projects for scarce resources. The gener osity o f Sir Run Run Shaw has rendered all this unnecessary and has made possible the rapid develop ment o f the University. In its general orientation Shaw College is expected to follow in the main the pattern which has been set by the three original Colleges. It w ill have an Assembly o f Fellows and be responsible for
