The Patron o f Shaw College Sir Run Run Shaw, world renowned philan thropist and movie magnate, is the Patron of Shaw College. With his usual generosity and particular con cern for the education of the young, he has now made possible the creation of a fourth college at the University. Sir Run Run is Chairman of two of Hong Kong's most successful public companies, Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) lim ited and HK-TVB Limited. His con tribution to the entertainment industry is legendary, as is his generosity towards educational institutions and the arts in Hong Kong. Sir Run Run is the Chair man of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. He is also the President of the Hong Kong Red Cross. Sir Run Run's long association with the Univer sity began in 1967 when he became amember of the Board of Trustees of United College. In 1972 he was elected Vice-Chairman and became Chairman four years ago. Since 1977 , he has also been a member of the University Council. During this period, from 1967 to 1987 , a span of some twenty years, he has made numerous donations to the University, notably the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall and an academic building to be erected at the side of the University Mall. In 1974 , Sir Run Run was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen with the award of CBE and received a knighthood three years later. In 1980 and 1981, both universities in Hong Kong conferred upon him honorary degrees of Doctor of Law and Doctor of Social Science. In endowing a new College in the University, Sir Run Run has made the largest single contribution to any educational institution in Hong Kong and will, by so doing, bring enormous benefits to many gener ations of students to come. The University Council has named the new College after Sir Run Run and has invited him to be its Patron. NEWS 5
