College Head Professor Char-nie Chen, Professor of Psychia try, was appointed by the University Council as the first Head of Shaw College for a term of four years effective 11th February, 1987. Professor Chen, MB (National Taiwan Univer sity), MSc (London), FRCPsych, FRANZCP, DPM, had been a senior academic and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in St. George's Hospital, University of London for many years before he joined this Univer sity in 1981 as Professor and Chairman of the Depart ment of Psychiatry. He is also Director of the Psy chiatric Epidemiology ResearchUnit in the University. Professor Chen has been active in University affairs and in promoting the welfare of students and staff. He is past Council Chairman of the University's Teachers' Association, Chairman of the Committee on Psychological Counselling Service and Member of the Senate Committee on Staff-Student Relations. He has served on the Board of Trustees of New Asia College since 1984 and chaired a number of the College's administrative committees. He has acted as Head of New Asia College many times. Professor Chen is also past President of the Hong Kong Psychiatric Association and Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences, Executive Chairman of the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, and Hon­ orary Consultant Psychiatrist o f the Hong Kong Association for the Mentally Handicapped. 6 NEWS
