Sir Run Run Shaw Receives H on o ra ry Degree The University o f Sussex in the United Kingdom conferred an honorary degree o f Doctor o f Letters on Sir Run Run Shaw, a Council member o f this University and Patron o f Shaw College, at a con­ gregation in Brighton in July. Owing to his other commitments, Sir Run Run was not able to attend the ceremony. The Registrar and Secretary of the University o f Sussex, Dr. Geoffrey Lockwood, who arrived in Hong Kong at the end o f August, formally presented the degree certificate to Sir Run Run at a brief presenta­ tion ceremony held on 1st September at The Chinese University o f Hong Kong. Dr. Lockwood paid tribute to Sir Run Run for his philanthropy and his business achievements in the citation. He stressed that 'Sir Run Run has been one o f the principal figures in the development o f the close relationship between the University of Sussex and The Chinese University. The founding Vice-Chancellor o f the University o f Sussex, Lord Fulton, was also the Chairman o f the Commission which created The Chinese University and he con­ tinued to serve actively on the Council o f The Chinese University un til his death last year. It was Lord Fulton's wish that the two universities should remain related, and that wish has been fulfilled over the years through the good offices and personal interest o f Dr. Ma Lin and w ith the help o f Sir Run Run's bene faction.' Present at the ceremony were representatives from the various education and medical institutions, members o f The Chinese University as well as long­ time friends o f Sir Run Run. Over ninety guests attended. 15
