station, based on a popular microcomputer, while the Hong Kong University w ill create compatible software packages specially tailored to the needs o f the local manufacturing sector. The project w ill benefit local manufacturers by making CAD/CAM technology more accessible and is an excellent example o f cooperation between Government and the two universities to promote industrial development. It w ill also enable the two universities to acquire further expertise in CAD/CAM technology, which can in turn be passed on to stu dents and practising engineers. The signing ceremony, presided over by the Director o f Industry, Mr. Yeung Kai-yin, took place on 24th July. The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ma Lin, signed the agreement on behalf o f The Chinese University. University Members Serve on Outside Committees (1) Dr. Ma Lin , the Vice-Chancellor, as a member of the Hong Kong SAR Basic Law Drafting Com mittee, has been appointed Co-Chairman o f the Com mittee to Select the Design for the Regional Flag and Emblem o f the Hong Kong SAR. (2) The following members o f the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards and committees: * Professor Joseph C.K. Lee, Dean o f Medicine and Professor o f Morbid Anatomy, has been appointed a member o f the Medical Development Advisory Committee for a term o f two years effective 1st July, 1987. * Professor S.W. Tam, Dean o f Graduate School and Professor o f Chemistry, has been appointed a member o f the Board o f Education for a term o f one year un til 30th June, 1988. * Dr. Richard M.W. Ho, Lecturer in Chinese, and Mr. William H.C. Wan, Alumni Affairs Officer, have been appointed Non-Official Justices o f the Peace for Hong Kong w ith effect from 30th June, 1987 for such period as they remain in Hong Kong. * Dr. Wong Chung-kwong, Lecturer in Psychiatry, has been reappointed a member o f the Board o f Governors o f the Hong Kong Baptist College for a further term o f three years w ith effect from 1st July, 1987. * Professor Leung Ping-chung o f the Department o f Orthopaedic and Traumatic Surgery has been ap pointed an adjudicator o f the Registration o f Persons Tribunal w ith effect from 1st July, 1987 for a period un til 28th February, 1989. * Dr. Fanny M.C. Cheung, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, has been appointed a member o f the Broadcasting Authority for a term o f three years effective 1st September, 1987. (3) The following members represent the Univer sity on outside committees: * Professor Yeung Yue-man, University Registrar, on the Hong Kong Examinations Authority for a further term o f three years effective 1st August, 1987. * Dr. Joseph Y.S. Cheng, Senior Lecturer in Government and Public Administration, and Dr. Alfred F.M. Leung, Senior Lecturer in Physics, on the Commonwealth Scholarships Selection Committee for the 1988-89 Awards. * Dr. Fong-ching Chen, Director o f the Institute o f Chinese Studies, and Mr. David A. Gilkes, Univer sity Bursar, on the Working Group on Performance Indicators. * Mr. Hsu Dan-lin, Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, on the Examination Panel o f the Institute of Bankers in Hong Kong w ith effect from 1st Septem ber, 1987. New Chairman o f Appointments Board Mr. Tony Fung, Chairman and Managing Director o f Sun Hung Kai and Co. Ltd., has accepted the Vice-Chancellor's invitation to serve as Chairman o f the Appointments Board for a term un til 30th September, 1988. Mr. Fung is to succeed the Hon. David K.P. Li, Director and Chief Manager o f the Bank o f East Asia Ltd. He is also Vice-Chairman o f the Advisory Board o f the Three-Year MBA Programme o f the University. Obituary * The University records w ith regret the passing away o f Professor Li Fang-kuei, a 1976 Honorary graduate o f the University and a distinguished mem ber o f the University's Academic Advisory Board on Humanities, on 21st August, 1987 in the United States at the age of eighty-five. A leading linguist o f international repute, Pro fessor L i had had a life-long career devoted to lin guistic research and teaching. He had taught at Harvard, Yale, the University o f Washington, and the University o f Hawaii, from where he retired in 1974. * The University records w ith regret the passing away o f Madame Yang, mother o f Professor C.N. Yang, Distinguished Professor-at-Large, on 13th September, 1987 at the age o f ninety-one. 24
