Chow, Institute of Chem istry, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, on 17th July. — ‘Where Are the Lone-Pair Electrons in Sub- valent, Main-Group Compounds?', conducted by Professor J.J. Zuckermann, the Univer sity of Oklahoma, USA, on 7th August. — ‘The Application of Organo-Arsenic and -Antimony Compounds in Organic Synthesis', conducted by Professor Shen Yanchang, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Academia Sinica, on 26th August. — 'Soluble Proteins in Mamalian Lenses', con ducted by Professor Joseph Fu, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, on 11th September. — 'Renin Inhibitor as an Anti-Hypertensive ; Reality or Fantasy ?', conducted by Dr. Hing L. Sham, Abbott Laboratories, USA, on 2nd October. The seminar was jointly organized with the Department of Biochemistry. — 'Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Radical Ions' , conducted by Professor Gehard L. Closs, Department of Chemistry, the Univer sity of Chicago, on 12th October. — 'Cobalt-Mediated Cyclization Reaction in Organic Synthesis', conducted by Dr. C.S. Li, Oxford University, on 23rd October. * The Institute of Chinese Studies organized the following lectures: — ‘Basic Ingredients of the Art of Chinese Opera ’, conducted by Mr. Yu Zhenfei, a leading figure in kunju, on 22nd July. - 'Cultural Activities of Chinese Intellectuals in Singapore during the Thirties', conducted by Professor Yao Nan of the History Depart­ ment, Fudan University, Shanghai, on 28th September. — ‘A League of Four Major Tribal Groups in Ancient China', conducted by Professor Yu Weichao, Director of the Museum of Chinese History, China, on 6th October. 一 ‘Traditional Chinese Cosmology and Taiwan Folk Religions', conducted by Professor Li Yih-yuan, Research Fellow, Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica , Taiwan, on 10th October. The lecture was jointly organ ized with the Department of Anthropology. * The School of Education and the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, USA jointly organized a Colloquium on Moral Education and Character Development on 22nd July. Over twenty educators, philosophers and psychologists from Hong Kong and abroad attended the Colloquium and eight papers were presented. * The Department of Physics organized the following seminars: — 'Equilibrium and Non-equilibrium Dynamics in Proteins', conducted by Professor Robert Austin, Physics Department, Princeton University, on 10th August. — 'Quantum Hall Effect' , conducted by Pro fessor Dan Tsui, Department of Electrical Engineering, Princeton University, on 13th August. — 'Photoacoustic, Photothermal and Ultrasonic Studies of High Temperature Supercon- ductors' , conducted by Professor Zhang Xiao Rong, Department of Physics, Nanjing University, China, on 21st September. * The Department of Statistics held a seminar on 10th August. Professor Jozef L. Teugels, Department of Mathematics, Katheolieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, spoke on 'Estimating the Index in Pareto- type Distributions'. * Seven Ming Yu Visiting Scholars visited New Asia College between August and October: — Professor Tang Yi-jie, President of the Inter national Academy of Chinese Culture and Professor of Philosophy at Peking University, and Professor Li Zehou, Senior Research Fellow, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, visited the College on 21st August andjointly chaired a seminar in the Department of Philosophy. 25
