News in Brief Vice-Chancellor Honoured The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles K. Kao, has become the first Chinese ever to win the distinguished Japanese Computer and Communications Prize for his contribution in research into optical fibre communication. He was presented with the award by the Chairman of NEC at a ceremony in Tokyo on 26th November. Professor Kao was the first to point out theoretically the feasibility and significance of low-loss glass fibre for transmission systems, with supporting experimental evidence. The Foundation for Computer and Communication Promotion is an authorized non-profit organization established in 1985 to encourage and support technological development and study in the field of integration of computer with communications technologies, and to promote the further development of the electronics industry. Council Membership * Dr. the Hon. P.C. Woo has been re-elected as Vice-Chairman of the Council for a term of two years from 20th October, 1987. * Mr. James Z.M. Kung has been re-elected by the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College as a member of the Council for a further period of three years from 18th October, 1987. * Mr. Edwin Tao has been re-elected by the Board of Trustees of New Asia College as a member of the Council for a further period of three years from 18th October, 1987. * Professor Ma Lin and Professor G.H. Choa have been elected by the Board of Trustees of Shaw College as members of the Council for a period of three years with effect from 10th September, 1987. * Professor Mun Kin-chok, Professor of Marketing, who by virtue of his election as Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, has become a member of the Council for a term of three years from 1st August, 1987. * Mr. T.L . Tsim has been elected by the Assembly of Fellows of Shaw College as a member of the Council for a period of three years from 1st August, 1987. * Dr. the Hon. P.C. Woo and Dr. Wang Gungwu have been re-nominated by the Chancellor as members of the Council, each for a further period of three years from 18th October, 1987. * Dr. the Hon. S.L. Chen resigned from the Council upon his retirement from the Legislative Council on 31st August, 1987. * The Hon. Chung Pui-lam has been elected by the Unofficial Members of the Legislative Council to serve on the University Council for the unexpired period of membership of Dr. S.L. Chen, from 2nd October, 1987 to 30th June, 1990. Committees to Plan 25th Anniversary Celebration Programmes The University celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 1988. To prepare for this special occasion, the Administrative and Planning Committee has approved the establishment of a Steering Committee on the 25th Anniversary Celebration Programmes together with two Sub-Committees to attend to overall planning and coordination of the year's activities.
